1. Introduction
===================================================
The Curse of Monkey Island is the third installment in the superb Monkey Island
series of games. The plot for this game involves a mysterious diamond ring that
Guybrush finds in the cargo hold of the evil pirate LeChuck’s ship. Unknown to
him however, is that the ring is cursed and transforms whoever wears it into a
solid gold statue. So when he gives the ring to his girlfriend Elaine, having
her turn into a statue is only the start of his problems. Guybrush must journey
to Blood Island to find the only other ring that can cure Elaine, but according
to the fortune teller, that is also the place where Guybrush will die.

2. Walkthrough
===================================================
——————————————————————————-
2.1. Part I: The Demise of the Zombie Pirate LeChuck
——————————————————————————-
The game starts in the ship, where a small pirate is currently firing a cannon
at the fort of the nearby island. Get the ramrod on the wall, then talk to the
small pirate. Say “I’m Guybrush Threepwood, who are you?”, say “Are you wearing
a fake beard?” and Guybrush will recognise the pirate as Wally the cartographer
from the second Monkey Island game. Say “I’m not in the mood for sales hype.”
to receive the pirate literature. Say “You’re a failure as a pirate.” and he
will threaten to shoot. Select any speech option on the next two selections and
Wally will admit that he isn’t a pirate, and drops his plastic hook.
Get the plastic hook and then use the cannon to view of LeChuck’s minions, with
the fort burning in the background. Move the cannon using the mouse and fire by
left clicking to defeat all four of the boats, and Guybrush will then return to
the ship. Look out the window to see the Murrary on the board below, who is one
of the funniest characters in the game. Open the inventory to view all of the
items that have been collected so far. Use the plastic hook with the ramrod to
create the gaff, and then use the gaff on the debris to retrieve Murray’s arm
and the cutlass. Return to the ship and use the cutlass on the cannon restraint
rope, then use the cannon to blast through the door to the cargo hold.
Pick up the bag of nickels near the portrait of LeChuck to find a ring. Get the
ring, and use it on the porthole to sink the ship. Guybrush will float up to
the surface using the floatation device, where we meet Elaine Marley from the
previous two games. He asks Elaine to marry her and gives her the mysterious
ring from the treasure hold, which Wally explains actually has a voodoo curse
on it. As Elaine realises that this gift of Guybrush’s was actually just an
item from the treasure hold, she attempts to hit Guybrush but transforms into a
solid gold statue before she has a chance.
——————————————————————————-
2.2. Part II: The Curse Gets Worse
——————————————————————————-
BEACH
—–
There is nothing we can do for Elaine at the moment, so get the glowing ember
near the remains of the ship and exit the area to view the map of the island.
Every location but the fort is currently named as ‘?’ because Guybrush hasn’t
visited there yet. Travel to the misty area near the left side of Guybrush.
SWAMP
—–
Murray is currently on a spike on top of the gate. After he scares Guybrush,
stop talking to him and continue down the path to the wrecked ship. Inside,
pull the alligator tongue to reveal the fortune teller from the previous two
Monkey Island games. Say “Nice place. I love what you’ve done with it.”, and
she will ask if you want to see pictures of her children. Select any speech
option and Guybrush will then explain what happened to Elaine.
Of course leaving a solid gold statue on a beach of a pirate island is not the
most sensible thing to do, so when the fortune teller asks where the statue has
been hidden, select any speech option to return to the beach and view a pirate
ship sailing away with the statue. When Guybrush returns to the fortune teller
she will explain that to break the curse, the ring must be replaced with one of
greater value. Say “Where am I going to find a huge, uncursed diamond ring?” to
hear that it is found on Blood Island, where she says that Guybrush will die.
Say “Uh huh. So, any huge uncursed rings on any other islands?”, say “How do I
get to Blood Island?” to discover that the three things needed to travel to
Blood Island are a map, a ship and a crew. Stop talking to the fortune teller
and get the pin from the doll on the floor. Use the bag of nickels on the
gumball machine to receive a pack of gum. (On Mega-monkey, get the paste from
the floor as well). Exit the ship and return to the map. Enter the right side
of Puerto Pollo, the town at the top-right corner of the map.
PUERTO POLLO
————
Go through the door at the left side of the clock tower to enter the prop room
of the theater. Get the magic wand on the table, and use it on the magic hat to
reveal a book on ventriloquism. Get the book, get the dandruff on the coat to
get the lice, then get the glove from the pirate coat. (On Mega-monkey, look at
the coat to reveal the dandruff, then open the pocket to get the glove). Exit
the theater and enter the Barbery Coast at the bottom-right corner of the town.
Use the glove with Edward Van Helgen to challenge him to a duel on the field of
honor at the top of the town.
When he asks you to choose a weapon, close the lid and open the banjo case to
choose the banjo. Edward will play a song on the banjo that ends with one
string at the end of each line. Remember the four strings that are played, and
copy them when Guybrush plays to complete the first round of the duel. Five
strings are played in the second round, so copy these when Guybrush plays. (On
Mega-monkey, a third round is played where six strings are used). As Edward
starts to play the final round by himself, look at the gun pile and get the
pistol, then use it on the dueling banjo to win the duel.
After the dirty trick that Guybrush used to win, Edward is glad to be the first
member of his crew. When Hamish puts the comb on the table, use the lice on it.
Hamish will chop off Rottingham’s hair and throw him outside the shop. Sit in
the barber chair and use the handle at the side. As he rises in the chair,
Guybrush will kick the paperweight off the book (On Mega-monkey, pick up the
paperweight after using the handle once). Hamish will walk out of the room to
go and find another paperweight, so now we can use the handle at the side of
the chair three more times to rise up to the ceiling.
Get the scissors from the beam in the ceiling, and Guybrush will lower the
chair as Hamish returns. Get the jawbreaker on the floor (On Mega-monkey, push
Cutthroat Bill twice first to find the jawbreaker), and exit the barber shop.
Walk to the left side of town to see the mysterious flowers at the left side of
Captain Blondebeard’s shop. Use the scissors with the mysterious flowers to get
the ipecac flower, then use the scissors with the undergrowth to cut through to
a clearing with a snake sign. Look at the sign, and a large snake will then
drop down from the tree to eat Guybrush.
SNAKE AND QUICKSAND
——————-
Get the numerous items found in the snake, then use the pancake syrup with the
ipecac flower to create the syrup of ipecac. Use this with the snake head to
land down in the quicksand below. Get the hollow reed from the reeds at the
right side of the quicksand, then get a thorn from the thorny plant. Use the
thorn with the hollow reed to create the pea shooter. Still in the inventory,
use the helium balloons on the paperweight, then blow the floating balloon so
that it floats over toward the chicken. Use the peashooter on the balloon,
which will explode and drop the vine on the tree. After leaving the quicksand,
exit Danjer Cove and enter the left side of Puerto Pollo.
PUERTO POLLO
————
Enter the left side of Puerto Pollo and enter Captain Blondebeard’s shop on the
right. When he asks if you have a reservation, say “Of course I have a
reservation!”, and Blondebeard will then let you enter his shop. Get one of the
biscuits from the barrel in the corner. Get the club card from the dish on the
table (On Mega-monkey, eat the biscuit to get the maggots, then use the maggots
with the gross chicken on the table to get the club card). Push the quiet
patron and get the serrated bread knife from his back.
Give the jawbreaker to Blondebeard to loosen his gold tooth, then give him the
pack of gum. When he blows the bubble with the tooth in it, pop it with the pin
and the tooth will drop out. Get the gold tooth, then exit the shop. (To get
the gold tooth on Mega-monkey, chew the pack of gum to get the chewed gum.
Inhale from the helium balloon, use the gold tooth in the chewed gum and then
chew the tooth in gum. It will float out the window of the shop and land in the
mudpuddle outside. Use the pie pan in the mudpuddle to get the tooth).
Walk through the archway at the right side of the clock tower. Walk to the
grassy knoll and use the serrated bread knife with the sawhorse to tip it over,
which will create a trail of rum leading down toward the rubber tree. Use the
ember on stick with the trail of rum, and the explosion of the barrel will
cause the rubber tree to land on the pile of logs. (On Mega-monkey, walk west
to the area at the bottom of the grassy knoll and use the biscuit cutter on the
rubber trees at the right side of the area to get the rubber plug).
Enter the Barbery Coast at the bottom-right corner of the town and show the
gold tooth to Cutthroat Bill, who will agree to become the second member of the
crew. Talk to Haggis and say “How would you like to join my crew?”, select any
of the speech options to find that Haggis wants to challenge Guybrush to the
caber toss. Say “Sounds great! Let’s do it!” to travel to the area near the
grassy knoll. As we blasted the rubber tree onto the log pile earlier on, when
Guybrush throws the tree it will bounce far down the track and Haggis will
agree to become the third and final member of the crew. Exit Puerto Pollo and
select Danjer Cove at the top-left corner of the map.
DANJER COVE
———–
(On Mega-monkey, use the paste with the rubber plug, then use the sticky rubber
plug with the gaping hole in the boat). Use the boat and row left across the
water to the pirate ship. Use the serrated bread knife with the plank, then
climb into the pirate ship to be captured by Mr. Fossey, who says that the
punishment for boarding the ship is to be tarred and feathered, or to walk the
plank. Select any speech option, and Mr. Fossey will decide to tar and feather
Guybrush as the the plank has been sawn off. Exit Danjer Cove and enter the
left side of Puerto Pollo.
PUERTO POLLO
————
Enter Captain Blondebeard’s shop, and he will mistake Guybrush for the demon
chicken El Pollo Diablo. Select any of the speech options and Blondebeard sends
Guybrush to the kitchen of the pirate ship at Danjer Cove.
DANJER COVE
———–
Mr. Fossey believes he can hear LeChimp talking, so use the ventriloquism book
on LeChimp to give some new instructions. After he leaves the kitchen, Guybrush
will retrieve the treasure map from the vase. Open the porthole and exit the
ship, then walk right to exit Danjer Cove.
PUERTO POLLO
————
Walk through the door at the left side of the clock tower to the theater prop
room. Walk up the steps to the lighting area and pull the handle to find the
location for Elaine. (On Mega-monkey, press these buttons to find Elaine:
Bottom-right, top-left, left, bottom, right, top-right twice, right, bottom-
left). The actor on stage will start to juggle the knives and is about to
juggle the cannonballs next, so use the chicken grease with the cannonballs.
After the actor drops the cannonball, walk right to the stage and get the
shovel to take the statue of Elaine to the pirate ship at Danjer Cove.
DANJER COVE
———–
Leave the ship, use the rowboat to paddle back to the beach and then walk right
to exit Danjer Cove. Select the beach at the right side of the island.
BRIMSTONE BEACH
—————
Show the club card to the cabana boy. Select any speech option, and he will let
you enter the exclusive beach. Before going there, get one of the towels from
the basket and use it in the ice bucket to make the wet towel. Use the wet
towel on the cabana boy and he will run out of his hut. Get the cooking oil
from inside the hut. Get two more towels from the basket and use them with the
ice bucket. Walk north to the beach and walk on the sand to find that it’s too
hot to cross. Use the wet towels to cross over to the other side of the beach.
Get the mug, then open the gate to return to the map.
PUERTO POLLO
————
Walk to the left side of Puerto Pollo and use the mug with the mug on the
lemonade stall to get the bottomless mug. Talk to the small pirate and say “I’d
like to buy some lemonade.”, and Kenny will run away after he realises he’s
been tricked. Get the pitcher from the table and use it in the dye vat on the
right to fill it with red dye. Exit Puerto Pollo.
BRIMSTONE BEACH
—————
Give the bottomless mug to the Palido, then use the pitcher with the red dye on
the bottomless mug. Palido will think he has a tan, and turns over to reveal
the map to Blood island on his back. Use the cooking oil on the map and then
get the map from his back. We now have all of the three items we need, so exit
the beach to leave Plunder Island on the pirate ship.
——————————————————————————-
2.3. Part III: Three Sheets to the Wind
——————————————————————————-
After the cutscene, Rottingham will board the ship to steal the map to Blood
Island. The crew will then start singing a rhyme song which Guybrush interacts
with by choosing different speech options. In the fifth verse, choose the line
“We’ll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat an orange.” to stop the song. Haggis
will then ask Guybrush if he’d like to battle on his own, or if he’d rather let
the crew help out. The only difference here is that the tough sea battle
requires more than one cannonball to sink the enemy pirate ships.
Select either option, then look at the navigational chart to see all of the
pirate ships in the area. At the moment, all of the ships are represented by
‘?’ as we haven’t battled them yet. Select one of the ships to start the open
sea battle. Select an area on the sea by left clicking, and try and move
Guybrush’s ship close to the other pirate ship. When you’ve done this, keep
right clicking to fire cannonballs at the ship. After defeating the ship,
Guybrush will board it to fight the pirate.
It’s your turn first to throw an insult, so choose any speech option and read
the answer from the pirate. Every time you select an insult that the pirate
doesn’t know the answer to, you’ll move forward. Every time you select an
insult that the pirate does know the answer to, you’ll move back and it is then
be the pirate’s turn to answer a question. When the pirate says a new insult,
that insult is added to Guybrush’s list of insults. When the pirate answers an
insult correctly, his is answer added to the list of Guybrush’s answers. The
full list of insults and answers are found in section three of this FAQ.
If you’ve decided to fight the ships without help from the crew, then look at
the navigation chart and travel to the Plunder Town Harbor to meet Kenny, who
has changed from his previous occupation of lemonade seller to pirate ship
weapon seller. Talk to him and say “What have you got for sale today?” to hear
about all of the weapons that Kenny is selling.
As Guybrush defeats the more difficult pirates he will be able to choose more
powerful weapons. Continue to defeat the various pirates until you have the
most powerful cannon: The Destructomatic T-47, then beat Rottingham’s ship to
challenge him. You will then have to fight Rottingham in a similar to way to
the pirates. The full list of insults and answers can be found in section three
of this FAQ. After defeating Rottingham, Guybrush will travel to Blood Island.
——————————————————————————-
2.4. Part IV: The Bartender, The Thieves, His Aunt, And Her Lover
——————————————————————————-
SHIPWRECK
———
After crashing into the beach on Blood Island, Haggis will explain that the
crew have decided to leave Guybrush and set sail back to the barber shop on
Plunder Island. Talk to Haggis and say “My that’s a big bottle of lotion you
have there.”, say “There’s no way that I can have even a drop of lotion?”, and
Haggis will agree to give you the lotion providing you can find something to
patch the ship. Say “I’ll let you get back to work.”. Get the bottle in the
sand, bite it to get the cork, then exit the beach to view the map. Select the
hotel in the middle of the island and walk inside.
HOTEL
—–
Walk to the left side of the hotel and get the recipe book on the bar, and the
empty jar at the right side of the bar. Goodsoup the bartender currently has a
hangover, and according to the eighth page of the recipe book it seems that we
need dog hair, an egg and a pepper. Get the cushion from the bar stool, exit
the hotel and return to the map. Click the area at the left side of the hotel
to travel to the cemetery.
CEMETERY
——–
Walk left along the path to arrive in an area with an old dog. Get the chisel
and the mallet near the carved tombstone, and give the tasty, buttery biscuit
(or the half-eaten maggoty biscuit on Mega-Monkey) to the old dog. Get the dog
hair from the old dog, then exit the cemetery to return to the map. Click the
area near the bottom-right corner of the map to travel to the beach.
BEACH
—–
Use the cushion with the rocks on the beach, and then use the mallet on the
rubber tree to get the egg from the cushion. Exit the beach and select the
windmill at the left side of the map.
WINDMILL
——–
Get a pepper from the plant at the right side of the windmill, exit the area.
HOTEL
—–
Give the dog hair, egg, and pepper to Goodsoup. After Goodsoup recovers, say
“I’d like a drink, please.”, then select any speech option (on Mega-monkey,
select “Give me a big, fruity drink with an umbrella in it.”) to get a drink
and an umbrella. He will also give you the rest of the Head-B-Clear that was
used to cure his hangover. Use the chisel with the Head-B-Clear to open it,
then use the Head-B-Clear in the drink. Drink the spiked drink, and after the
cutscene, Guybrush will wake up in the crypt.
CEMETERY
——–
Use the chisel on the bottom-right coffin, and get the coffin nails. Use the
chisel with the middle coffin to meet Stan, the enthusiastic salesman from the
previous games. After getting his laminated business card, exit the crypt and
walk north to the hotel.
HOTEL
—–
Open the door at the right side of the poster to enter a room with a big wheel
o’ cheese. Use the chisel on the cheese, get the refrigerator magnet and then
exit the hotel to return to the map. Select the strange lights at the left side
of the volcano to enter the village.
VILLAGE
——-
Get the block of tofu from the fruit table and get the auger and the measuring
cup from the small table on the right. Go north up the path toward the volcano
to meet Lemonhead. Use the auger with the block of tofu to make the tofu mask,
then use the tofu mask. Lemonhead will now allow Guybrush to continue up the
path toward the top of the volcano. Throw the un-melted cheese in the volcano
and it will erupt, causing the lava to flow under the cooking pot outside the
hotel. Exit the village.
HOTEL
—–
Outside the hotel, use the remaining un-melted cheese in the cooking pot, then
get the cooking pot to take it down to Haggis at the shipwreck.
SHIPWRECK
———
Now that Haggis has something to patch the ship with, he now lets Guybrush take
the hand lotion. Get the lotion and exit the area. Return to the hotel.
HOTEL
—–
Talk to the fortune teller. Say “Hi, I’m Guybrush. And you would be…?”, say
“What’s in the cards for me? Fame? Fortune? Romance?”, and she will reveal five
death cards. (On Mega-monkey, continue talking to the fortune teller until all
five cards are on the table). Get the tarot cards, then walk upstairs to the
second floor. Open the left door to enter a small room with some old portraits.
Use the mallet with the nail on the ripped section of wall, then exit the room
to see that the portrait has fallen down.
Get the nail from the floor near the portrait (on Mega-monkey, get the portrait
as well, use it on the left door and then use the scissors on it to get the
face. Open the door to return to the room and look through the porthole to
convince Goodsoup that Guybrush looks like one of the family). Open the door to
return to the hall and walk through the right doorway (on Mega-monkey, use the
laminated business card to open the door).
Pull the bed down, then use the coffin nails and the nail on the bed. Get the
book on top of the skeleton, exit the room and walk downstairs to talk to
Goodsoup. Say “What do you know about the lost ring of Blood Island?”, say “I
thought if I died, I’d be buried with your aunt.” to find out that Guybrush
wasn’t put in the Goodsoup crypt as he wasn’t a member of the family.
Say “Uncle Griswold! It’s me! Don’t you recognize me?”, select any answer when
he asks Guybrush’s name, (On Mega-monkey, say “Look at me! Don’t I look just
like a Goodsoup?”), say “I could just talk about Goodsoup history all day.”,
and Guybrush will convince Goodsoup that he is a member of his family. Talk to
Goodsoup and say “I’d like a drink, please.” to get another drink. Use the
Head-B-Clear in the drink, then drink it to be taken to the Goodsoup crypt.
GOODSOUP CRYPT
————–
Walk past the ghost to the left side of the crypt, where Murray can be heard
plotting his attempt to frighten Guybrush. Get the crowbar from the coffin, and
walk near the crack in the wall to see Murray drop down. Pick him up, then look
through the crack to see Mort. Use the skeleton arm to get the lantern (On
Mega-monkey, use the paste with the skeleton arm first) and use Murray with the
lantern to make Mort open the crypt. Exit the crypt and return to the hotel.
HOTEL
—–
(On Mega-monkey, get the mirror above the left side of the bar, then put the
face from the portrait in the mirror frame). Go through the door at the right
side of the poster to enter the room with the wheel o’ cheese. Get the death
certificate from the bottom drawer of the file cabinet, then exit the hotel.
CEMETERY
——–
Return to the cemetery to find that Stan has transformed the crypt into a new
insurance office. Enter the office and give the gold tooth to Stan to buy the
insurance policy. Give the death certificate to Stan to get the insurance
money, then exit the cemetery to return to the map.
WINDMILL
——–
Open the door to climb up to the path at the top. (On Mega-monkey, use the
umbrella on the windmill blades to get to the top). Use the empty jar with the
barrel to fill it with sugar-water, then exit the area. Select the clearing at
the left side of the shipwreck to find the gold statue of Elaine, with many
fireflies above the stump on the right.
CLEARING
——–
Put the jar of water on the stump, and the fireflies will then fly into the jar
to make the lantern. Use the chisel with the jar lid in the inventory to put
air holes in it, then use the jar on the fireflies. Exit the area to return to
the map, and select the lighthouse at the bottom of the map.
LIGHTHOUSE
———-
Use the lantern on the lantern post (On Mega-monkey also use the mirror from
the hotel with the lighthouse mirror), which will shine a beam of light toward
the beach. Exit the lighthouse and select the beach to find that a mysterious
figure has arrived.
BEACH
—–
The mysterious figure needs a compass so he can navigate to Skull Island. Use
the measuring cup with the seawater. Open the inventory and combine the cork
and the pin, then combine the cork with the refrigerator magnet, and finally
combine the cork with the measuring cup to make the compass. Give the compass
to the mysterious figure, then talk to him and say “I’d like to ride out to
Skull Island, please.” to travel to Skull Island.
SKULL ISLAND
————
After the cutscene, Guybrush will climb up to the top of the island. Talk to
the winch operator and say “Would you lower me down to the smugglers’ cave?”.
As the platform is lowered it will break and Guybrush will start to fall. Use
the umbrella from the inventory to float into the cave. In the cave, say “I
have got SO much money it’s almost embarassing.”
Select any name from the list, select any speech option after he laughs, then
say “Maybe we could make a deal.”, and he will challenge Guybrush to a game of
poker. Say “Sounds fun! Deal me in, baldy!”, then select any speech option when
he asks if you trust them. When the game starts, show the tarot cards to King
Andre to win the game and get the enormous diamond. After Guybrush returns to
Blood Island, select the hotel.
HOTEL
—–
Walk upstairs to the second floor. Go through the right door and use the
crowbar with the boarded hole and the bed. After the cutscene, Guybrush will
return to the Goodsoup family crypt.
GOODSOUP CRYPT
————–
Get the engagement band at the top of the steps, then exit the crypt and the
cemetery to return to the map.
CLEARING
——–
Use the hand lotion with the cursed diamond ring, then pull the cursed diamond
ring from Elaine’s finger. Combine the enormous diamond with the engagement
band, and then use the completed diamond ring with Elaine. As she transforms
back to her normal self, they will both be captured by LeChuck.
——————————————————————————-
2.5. Part V: Kiss of the Spider Monkey
——————————————————————————-
This part starts in a ride in the amusement park, where LeChuck starts talking
to Guybrush. Continue selecting the bottom speech option until LeChuck becomes
annoyed and transforms Guybrush into a child. Open the door to enter the park.
Talk to Dinghy Dog and say “How can I win one of these fabulous prizes?”, say
“Bet you can’t guess how old I am.”, then say “Give me that anchor!”. Get the
anchor and use it with the stack of pies. (On Mega-monkey use the bottle of
shaving foam with the pie pan, then the anchor with the fake pie. Use the heavy
fake pie with the stack of pies).
When the pie is launched from the cannon, it will hit the mime. Open the gate
and look through the hole to get the meringue pie. Push Dinghy Dog four times
(or six times on Mega-monkey) to get the Dinghy Dog hair. Walk to the right
side of the park and get the pepper mill from the snowcone stall. Talk to the
soda jerk and say “I’d like a plain snowcone, please.”. In the inventory, use
the dog hair, pie and pepper mill on the plain snowcone. Eat the disgusting
snowcone and Guybrush will transform back to his normal self.
——————————————————————————-
2.6. Part VI: Guybrush Kicks Butt Once Again
——————————————————————————-
This part of the game consists of a rollercoaster ride that passes four areas.
Jump out at the first area with the model of the three-headed monkey and get
the fallen rope. Get back in the cart and jump out at the second area with the
pirate ship. Get the keg o’ rum and return to the cart. Jump out at the third
area with the model of LeChuck and get the flask o’ oil. (In Mega-monkey, blow
the flask o’ oil and then get it).
Jump out at the fourth area with the snow and walk up the path to find the
model of the giant snow monkey. In the inventory, use the fallen rope with the
flask o’ oil. Use the keg o’ rum with the monkey, and use the fallen rope with
the keg o’ rum to create a fuse. Walk down to the bottom of the path and wait
for LeChuck to appear. When he raises his arms to throw fire at Guybrush, use
the pepper mill on him to complete the game.
