Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth To Be Transformed Into An Interactive Novel – April 28, 2017

Daedalic Entertainment (State of Mind, Silence) intends to raise the adventure gaming bar with The Pillars of the Earth. The studio is adapting the 1,000 page Ken Follett novel — which has sold over 26 million copies — and is releasing it as a 2D interactive novel in three “books” for Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Each book will be comprised of seven chapters.

Book 1, From the Ashes is now available. Players will purchase a season pass and will automatically gain access to Books 2 and 3 as they become available.

Matt Kempke, author and game designer: It was both an honor and challenge adapting such a beloved source material as The Pillars of the Earth. We focused on staying true to the scope and spirit of the story while incorporating the more immersive aspects that the interactive novel format allows.

Kevin Mentz, author and game designer: Utilizing the interactivity of the game lets us to pull the player into the story and involve them emotionally so the core story beats and decisions feel more impactful and meaningful throughout.

In The Pillars of the Earth, you’ll be playing three protagonists as well as two extra playable characters. The game features over 200 hand-painted backgrounds depicting a faithful rendition of 12th century life, and offers meaningful, emotionally-engaging story choices that can influence the fates of its characters.

According to Daedalic, the game “is available now for $29.99 on PC or $39.99 on console and can be purchased and downloaded in your favorite online or local store.”

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal.
