In the side-scrolling adventure Black the Fall, you become an oppressed worker named Black who, when a door malfunctions in the factory in which he works, has a chance to escape. But this is only the beginning of his journey. His path to freedom will be filled with puzzles, pitfalls and manipulation.
The game, which has undergone some changes since it was announced in 2014, began as the project of two art students who took inspiration from the communist mentality of their past in Romania. The development team has now added six members whose backgrounds include Atari, Gameloft, Ubisoft, Activision and IBM.
After submitting a first build to Square Enix Collective, the team mounted a successful Kickstarter campaign and participated in Execution Lab’s accelerator program. It was then decided that the game would be reshaped “to better reflect the concept of escaping an oppressive system.”
Cristian Diaconescu, Creative Director, Sand Sailor Studio: We chose a puzzle game approach, as this would better illustrate what it means to cope with a restrictive regime…think 1984, by G. Orwell. As we explored this path we realized that the oppressive mechanics apply to the western world today, where a lot of people feel trapped in a conforming system they dislike. With Black the Fall, we are giving anyone a chance to outsmart the system and escape it.
A new playable demo will be exhibited at EGX Rezzed 2016 next week. The plan is to release Black the Fall this Fall on PC/Windows, Mac and Linux.
