Pathologic is a bleak, harsh, plot-driven survival open-world adventure game that was originally released in 2005 to huge critical acclaim in Russia. But its international release was clouded by poor translation and a lack of marketing, so the game failed to reach its audience. Developer Ice Pick Lodge is now remaking the game — or rather, re-imagining it — to bring the game closer to its original vision.

A plague breaks out in a remote steppe town full of weird local traditions. Three healers try to fight it: a scientist from the Capital, the son of a local shaman, and a half-crazed girl. Each has an idea of how the terrible disease came to be, and real magic to one becomes backwards superstitions to another.

Taking on the role of any of these healers, you’ll try to overcome the invisible evil while doing your best not to succumb to the disease while coping with bandits, hunger, and fatigue, and scavenging and bartering for pills, bread, and milk. It’s difficult to survive in Pathologic.

The original Pathologic was produced by an inexperienced team; its members learned a lot by trial-and-error. Many details and ideas were abandoned in the process.

The team now has the experience and skills needed to make Pathologic work as is should have worked from the start. The new Pathologic will have modern graphics, the script will be extended and reworked, there will be an advanced AI in the game and the mechanics will be thought through much better.

This is more than just a remake. It’s a re-imagining. Platforms include PC, MAC, Linux, PS4, and Xbox One.

A Kickstarter campaign is in progress until October 7, 2014. Please consider supporting Pathologic!

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal.
