VANISH is international indie developer 3DrunkMen’s first game. It’s just been released on Windows, Mac and Linux, and it’s free.

Initially released June 30th, 2013 as an Alpha, VANISH has grown into a cult classic. It’s been embraced by Let’s Players all over YouTube and Streamers on Livestream and Twitch. VANISH is all about immersing the player in the game using very little story and UI, but instead intensifying the ambiance through audio and visual cues.

You find yourself in a labyrinth, with walls that seem to be alive. You don’t know why you’re here. You don’t even know where here is. And there’s nothing to do except roam through relative darkness in search of a way out.

VANISH is not a typical maze-horror game. It’s dynamically generated at run-time and continues to change while the player plays it.

Each hall piece dynamically spawns with certain objects and events that dynamically spawn as well. This results in a perpetually changing game that no two players will ever experience exactly the same. You never know what’s going to happen.

What’s that noise? What’s that thing?

A pipe could burst. A creature could be waiting for you. What else might be in here? Which way are you supposed to go?

You may be able to find some glowsticks to briefly light your way, or notes someone has left that could contain potentially useful information. Other than that, you’re on you own.

VANISH isn’t a very long game. According to 3DrunkMen, “…it can take anywhere from 10 (lucky) to 40 (unlucky) minutes. There are no saves or checkpoints.”

Further, the game can’t be paused. From 3DrunkMen: “We added a 15-second ‘pause before forced to main menu’ because we want our players to keep moving and feel vulnerable when scared. If you were able to pause, you know you’d be safe. Adding the 15-second warning keeps the player immersed in the game.”

More from the team…

“We wanted to make a game that not only scared the player, but confused them while doing so…and make it dynamic, so we as developers don’t even know when things will happen.” – Mark Lemmons – Artist

“I enjoy making video-games, and when I found a team with the same passion as me for adventure-horror games, I knew we could create something amazing like Vanish.” – Vasco Torres – Programmer

“Is there anything we, as a team, could change to expand on this genre, even a little bit? These were questions that made the project challenging, and subsequently, fun for me.” – Sean McSheehan – Animator

VANISH has just one objective: find a way out without dying. It will test your sanity to the limit.

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal. "I put my heart and soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." - Vincent Van Gogh "I need solitude for my writing; not like a hermit - that wouldn't be enough - but like a dead man." - Franz Kafka "I've been to hell and back, my boy." - Susan Ashworth, The Cat Lady
