The story begins in April 1942, when Frank Carlson is caught in an air raid during the London Blitz and sent back to 1912. There, he has a second chance to complete his mission as a British secret agent aboard the RMS Titanic.
His main task is to retrieve a priceless copy of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. The search leads him to Zeitel, a German Oberst traveling with his protégé, Willi Von Haderlitz, and to Sasha Barbicon, a London art dealer involved in an exchange tied to a painting with hidden war plans. A Serbian stowaway, Vlad Demonic, serves as an intermediary.
Along the way, Carlson also becomes involved in other subplots and meets passengers such as Daisy Cashmore, Andrew Conkling, the Lambeths, Leyland Trask, Reverend Edgar Troutt, and Max Seidelmann. Penny Pringle assists him from time to time.
The number of objects recovered before escaping the ship affects the final cut scene and how history is changed. If all four are found, World War I, the Russian Revolution, and World War II never occur.
