It’s been announced that developer inXile Entertainment is making the first three Bard’s Tale games available for free to backers who pledge $20.00 or more on Kickstarter.

The games will be released as emulated versions of the classic games. inXile Entertainment also has an agreement with the original The Bard’s Tale III programmer Rebecca “Burger” Heineman to work on updated versions of the three games based on their Apple IIGS versions to run natively on modern Windows and Mac PCs. These enhanced versions will be free to backers as well.

Brian Fargo, inExile CEO: “It’s pretty amazing to see how far the graphics have come since these first games and it’s fun to think that people will still be playing these classics decades after release. These games made my career so it’s only fitting that we are doing another game. Of course playing them will not be necessary to understand the new title, but we wanted to give our backers the opportunity to and are always happy to give our supporters some free extra value!”

The Bard’s Tale IV will be a true sequel to the originals, living up to its rich dungeon-crawler heritage. As of this writing, the Kickstarter campaign has raised 94% of its $1,250,000 base goal with 29 days to go.

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal.
