Sometimes I just don’t get it.
I’ve been covering Shallow Space — an RTS game with RPG elements that takes place in 3D space — since I first became aware of it last November (see links, above). I’m a big fan of the Homeworld franchise, and Shallow Space immediately looked scrumptious to me.
I’ve been eagerly following its progress. It’s currently 10th in popularity out of 26,433 games on IndieDB. I thought for sure it was a shoo-in for a successful crowdfunding campaign.
Then the latest newsletter arrived, with the subject line, “Shallow Space Crowdfunding Unsuccessful: What next?” I could scarcely believe it. I was crestfallen.
Here we have a game that has great variety and lends itself nicely to replayability; it also has an in-depth story, heavily customizable ships, an immersive single-player campaign as well as multi-player and co-op modes, and is just plain gorgeous. Yet crowdfunding is unsuccessful.
On the other hand (and with all due respect), we have dime-a-dozen retro pixel graphic platformers that are wildly successful at crowdfunding.
I realize that a great many factors can influence whether a game is funded or not, but I still don’t get it.
All is not lost, however. Development of Shallow Space will continue, and your help is needed now more than ever.
You can currently pre-order the game at the introductory price of $14.99. This will yield access to both Steam Early Access and Release (the game has already been Greenlit), and Humble Bundle’s DRM-free Early Access and Release. Adding an optional “tip” will get you some additional goodies. Details and pricing are available here.
For a taste of what Shallow Space has to offer, you can download a demo here. If you like what you see, please consider pre-ordering. It’s estimated that Early Access will begin this August.
