Mystique
Chapter 2: The Child is the next chapter in the episodic
mobile mini-epic horror adventure game series.
The “story”
began in Mystique
Chapter 1: Foetus. That very brief game took place
entirely in one blood-soaked bathroom. When you solved the puzzles
and extricated yourself from the room that was it for that episode.
Chapter 2 continues the
same story. You’re out of the bathroom! And that same little
ghost girl beckons you onward.
This
time around, the game takes place in a much larger space, consisting
of around ten rooms of a creepy, haunted hospital. You figure out
pretty quickly that your ultimate goal this time around is to get
the elevator to work, so you can leave the floor.
Just like in the first
installment, the game follows the rules of traditional point-and-click
adventure games. At first, only a few rooms are open to you, but as
you collect more objects and solve more puzzles, the environments
gradually open up. The larger scope of the game gives the game designers
more opportunities for puzzle placement. While the puzzle collection
is not stellar, it’s a step in the right direction.
As
in the first game, the story is very thin, mostly delivered in hints
and fragments. You do get the feeling that there’s an actual
story lurking underneath, just beyond reach. In game reviews we call
that “atmosphere,” and that’s a good thing.
The graphics are primitive,
but effective. They might remind you of a Clock
Tower-era survival horror game.
The sound design, while
simple, is effective. Make sure you turn your media volume up to full
when you play!
You
definitely get the feeling that Bendroid is learning as they go. Mystique
Chapter 2: The Child is a step up from its predecessor.
My only big complaint is a rather non-intuitive puzzle near the end
that involves playing a very dirty trick on a hapless rat.
