The Daedalus Encounter
1995, Panasonic Interactive Media, Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc., Mechadeus, PalmSoft
The story follows Casey, a space marine who is brought back to life after a space accident as a brain grafted into a life-support system on the ship Artemis. He can only communicate through a yes/no interface and light pulses, and the player uses a small remote-controlled flying probe to interact with the world.
Casey’s partners, Ari and Zack, have become pirates after the war and are salvaging what they can to survive. During a salvage mission, the trio crash into a derelict alien spacecraft that is on a collision course with the Sun, and Casey must help them explore the ship and uncover the mystery of the Daedalus.
The game includes a number of puzzles, such as connecting colored laser beams with mirrors, unlocking a door with rotating shapes, and an advanced connect-the-dots computer interface, along with one combat sequence against aliens called Krin. It also uses acting sequences and alternate clips that change depending on the player’s choices.
Three filmed endings are described, including one where the Artemis burns and explodes, one where Casey changes the ship’s course away from the Sun, and one where a force field protects the ship as a giant red alien Queen appears.
