In 264 BC, Hannibal’s city has been overrun by Rome in the First Punic War. Mercenaries who fought for Carthage, tired of waiting to be paid, revolted and laid siege to the city.

In the midst of the unrest and massacres, Salammbo, daughter of the Shophet Hamilcar and commander of the Carthaginian forces, falls in love with Matho, the rebel chief leading the war against the city.

The player portrays Spendius, an escaped slave and companion of Matho. A survivor and opportunist, he is better suited to moving in the shadows than confronting enemies face to face.

To save his life, he must encourage the war and try to use the turmoil to gain power, fortune, and perhaps the love of Salammbo.
