Just about every kid is afraid there might be monsters around and hiding, say, under the bed or in the closet. Or in the basement.

Whether not you were this kind of kid, you can become one in The Basement, indie developer Brass Lantern Studios’ upcoming first-person horror adventure.

You’re ten years old. A storm is coming, and your parents have left you home alone (how responsible). You’re told that if the power goes off you’ll have to reset the breaker, which happens to be located in the basement.

Guess what? The power goes off.

Armed only with a flashlight, down you go in search of the breaker box. You soon learn that finding it is no simple task.

As your flashlight’s batteries die, you’ll discover that the nasty rumors about your house are true. Its history will come alive as you encounter many secrets of the “not nice” variety.

Yikes, is that a monster? No, silly. It’s just an old mop. What’s that over there in the shadows? Calm down, you fool. It’s nothing. Well, probably.

Look, if you’re gonna be such a baby, why don’t you just go back upstairs, look for some candles and hide in the corner? What’s that you say? There could be monsters up there, too?

True enough. Guess you’ll just have to tough it out downstairs.

The Basement is planned for PC, Mac and potentially Linux. A Kickstarter campaign with a base goal of $8,000 is underway and will run until January 8, 2015. Brass Lantern Studios would love to have your support.

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal.
