Kholat is an adventure-horror game focused on experience and storytelling, largely by means of a visual medium. To provide the best graphics quality possible, developer IMGN.PRO has switched to the Unreal Engine 4. See the trailer below for some results of the changeover.

Kholat is based on true events collectively known as the Dyatlov Pass Incident, during which a group of Russian students died in 1959. An inquest was held, attributed the deaths to “a compelling natural force” and was closed due to the absence of a guilty party.

The player will follow the path taken by the students on an expedition in the northern Ural Mountains. They never reached their destination. Instead, all died under mysterious circumstances.

A rescue expedition found that the team’s tent was torn open from the inside. The bodies of partially-clad students were found within a radius of several hundred meters. Everything pointed to some kind of event that caused sudden panic, leading to a tragic, chaotic escape attempt.

In most cases, death was attributed to bitter cold. But some bodies had strange multiple injuries.

Years later, the player has a chance to discover what really happened. Developer IMGN.PRO has done considerable research in order to create environments that resemble, as closely as possible, the ones in which the real events took place.

The game has a fear management system that will create an atmosphere of anxiety and dread based on what the player is doing. This will make each playthrough a unique experience.

Kholat is to be released in Q1 2015 for Mac and Windows.

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal.
