JA’s review of the original game

The original, narrative-driven sci-fi adventure J.U.L.I.A., released in March 2012, has been praised for its interesting story, puzzles and beautiful music. After its release, the game garnered a large and dedicated community.

Jan Kavan, CBE software director: “When I came up with the idea of launching a small crowdfunding campaign for J.U.L.I.A., it was focused on adding some enhancements and tweaking a few things which could have worked better in the original game. So the name J.U.L.I.A.: Enhanced Edition seemed appropriate. However after raising three times more than we asked for, we were driven to create an entirely different game.

“With different and more detailed gameplay mechanics, reworked story and ramped up visuals, simply adding the words ‘Enhanced Edition’ no longer made sense.

“We turned to our backers and asked about their opinions on a new name for the game and the result is a title we and our backers are very happy with. I also believe that the name better reflects the science fiction theme of an adventure game set in space and the heart of our story.”

Rachel Masters is a 35-year-old astrobiologist orbiting an unknown planet. She is one of an elite group of scientists chosen to embark on a highly critical mission to investigate a signal of artificial origin discovered deep within a faraway solar system similar to ours.

Abruptly awakened from a decades-long cryogenic sleep, Rachel finds herself alone and disoriented in a damaged spacecraft, the last surviving member of the crew. The mission’s artificial intelligence, J.U.L.I.A., and a huge reconnaisance robot know as Mobot are her only companions. The unlikely trio must make repairs, try to discover what went wrong and carry on with the mission.

J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars will feature:

  • 1920×1080 and 1280×720 resolution
  • Full-screen, detailed exploration of individual planets via a point-and-click interface
  • An estimated 60% more contents and much longer gameplay
  • Optional side-stories and quests, resulting in a more intricate game experience
  • A complete redesign of Rachel Masters

J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars will be released in 2014 for PC, Mac and Linux.

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal. "I put my heart and soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." - Vincent Van Gogh "I need solitude for my writing; not like a hermit - that wouldn't be enough - but like a dead man." - Franz Kafka "I've been to hell and back, my boy." - Susan Ashworth, The Cat Lady
