Wasteland – Electronic Arts, 1987
Once
upon a time RPGs were all about magic, potions, dungeons and dragons
(pun intended). Then a game called Wasteland crashed the party
with an in-your-face attitude, Uzis and mutants – and citizens rejoiced.
It’s quite difficult to decide which feature should be praised first
when talking about this game. How about the complex and revolutionary
character creation system? Whereas in most RPGs you have to choose
a class for your character like “fighter” or “thief”, Wasteland made
use of an intelligent system that allowed the game to shape your
character according to your actions, giving a whole new meaning to
the term ‘role-playing’. The only ‘critical’ decision you had to
make before starting the game was choosing the name of your characters
and a few attributes which would or would not be useful, depending
on how you played them. How about the exciting gameworld? The first
post-apocalyptic epic to grace your monitors. A mean and radioactive
world with countless of sub-quests that your entire party or just
one of your characters could engage in. Or the wide selection of
beautifully animated adversaries? Or the excellent writing that captured
the apocalyptic mood? Or the… you get the picture.
This game also served as inspiration for another epic, which, funnily
enough, found its way to this exclusive list.
