Sally Face: Episode Two, The Wretched is the second instalment of Steve Gabry’s horror adventure. Sal is having nightmares, Larry is still living with his father’s disappearance, and the Gear Boy is about to become a proper ghost-hunting instrument. This walkthrough covers the main story and all seven of the episode’s achievements.

How the game plays

  • Controls: keyboard.
  • Menu: the Esc key.
  • Inventory: the Q key. Items are used automatically.
  • Saving: automatic, into a single slot, SallyFaceGameSave_0.sav. On Windows it lives at C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\LocalLow\Steve Gabry\Sally Face. Keeping copies in a folder of your own is worth the trouble, both for the achievements and for the occasional bug.

The story so far

The first episode was told as Sal Fisher’s recollection during a session with Dr. Enon, the psychiatrist trying to establish why Sal killed the tenants of the Addison Apartments.

After his mother’s death, Sal and his father moved to Nockfell and into the Addison Apartments. Exploring the building, Sal saw things he could not explain, and in apartment 504 he met the ghost of Megan, a girl who had lived there years before. He also met Larry Johnson, who lives in the basement with his mother, the caretaker. They became friends at once. Larry has a loss of his own: his father, Jim Johnson, disappeared some years ago in circumstances nobody has explained.

On the day Sal arrived, his neighbour Mrs. Sanderson was murdered. Larry turned out to be an unwilling witness, having been fixing her toilet at the time, and the two boys worked out a way to get the evidence that pointed at Charley, the collector in 204. Sal handed it to the detective and Charley was arrested. In the last scene Charley, sitting in the police car, insisted he had not done it, and Dr. Enon confirmed that years later new evidence set him free.

Prologue

Sal’s nightmare

Sal and his mother are on a picnic. Answer her call and walk right towards her. Sal asks if he can pet the dog. Go right.

A dog watches Sal from among the trees. Sal comes out of the woods, but his face is now covered in blood.

You are on a bridge. Keep going right and climb into the van.

The second nightmare, after Larry’s story

Mrs. Sanderson asks Sal to fix the toilet. Go left and pick up the PLUNGER.

You find yourself in a sewer. Go right and talk to the pony, the figurine from Mrs. Sanderson’s collection that Charley stole. The pony is thirsty.

Go left and up the stairs. Go left and up the next flight. Go right and turn the lever; a green light comes on above it. Go right and up the stairs. Go right and turn that lever too; another green light comes on.

Come back to the stairs and go down. Turn left and go down the stairs. Go right and turn the third lever, which also lights green. Go left and down to the bottom level, then go right.

You find the pony drowned, with flies circling over it. Go right and through the door at the back of the screen. You are in the bathroom of Mrs. Sanderson’s apartment. Look out through the half-open door and watch her murder.

Look at the body and leave the apartment. Follow the bloody footprints left. You end up in front of Charley, sitting in an armchair. He asks Sal to come closer. The fastening on his face comes undone and the head of the Red Demon appears from inside.

The Wretched

Sal is sitting in Larry’s room. Larry suggests he follow him.

Goal: follow Larry

Go left and talk to Larry. You come out into the open air. Go left to the tree house, which Larry calls his fortress of solitude, and climb up.

Larry says his father built it before he disappeared. He tells Sal that the day before it happened he could not resist setting off fireworks in the yard, one of them flew through Mrs. Gibson’s window and killed her rabbit, and on the way back down from the neighbour’s he saw the Demon. Sal decides to lift the curse.

Go right and look at the photograph on the shelf. A Gear Boy icon appears in the corner: Sal explains that the device reacts to paranormal activity.

Open the chest and look at the box inside. The Gear Boy’s cartridge reacts to it, and Sal asks whether he can take it. You get a PUZZLE BOX with a piece missing. Climb down and head back into the building.

  • For the “had every optional conversation with Larry” achievement (1 of 8): speak to Larry again and ask “Is your mom okay?”

Leave Larry’s room. Sal decides to go and see Megan.

Goal: check on Megan in 504

Go out into the corridor. Talking to Chug, who is waiting for the vending machine to be restocked, is optional. Take the lift to the fifth floor and go to apartment 504. Sal calls Larry on the walkie-talkie so he can meet Megan, and Larry comes up.

Take Larry into the bathroom. Megan does not appear.

Larry suggests Sal talk to Todd, and goes home to his sick mother.

Goal: talk to Todd in 202

  • For the “had every optional conversation with Larry” achievement (2 of 8): go down to the basement and ask Larry “Which apartment does Todd live in again?”

Take the lift to the second floor and knock on apartment 202. Todd invites Sal in and introduces him to Ashley Campbell, who says goodbye and leaves almost at once. Ask Todd about her, listen, then choose “I need your help”.

Todd says he can help with paranormal research, and suspects a ghost lives in his bathroom. The two of them go there to try the Gear Boy out.

The attempt fails, and Todd offers to improve the device. He needs two things: something to boost the signal, meaning an aerial, and something to raise the power, meaning a battery.

Goal: find parts for the Gear Boy

Take the lift to the basement and go to Larry’s room. Stop by his scanner, which is not highlighted on screen, and ask whether you can have the aerial. Take the AERIAL and go back to Todd in 202.

Hand over the aerial and offer the battery out of your walkie-talkie. A minute later you have the improved SUPER GEAR BOY. Listen to Todd’s instructions for using it.

At Todd’s suggestion you test it in his bathroom. Press Shift, then R. Nothing happens at first, then the ghost of Greg rises out of the toilet. The test works, and Sal decides to carry on.

Goal: find the points of paranormal activity

Take the lift to the basement and go to Larry’s room.

  • For the “had every optional conversation with Larry” achievement (3 of 8): say to Larry “Check out my Super Gear Boy”.

Go left and outside, then up to the tree house. Stand at the photograph on the shelf and switch the Gear Boy on with Shift. It shows an active field. Press R.

You hear a broken message from a ghost, repeating something about a red ball several times.

  • For the “completed all chapters of the SGB game” achievement: open the inventory and start the Gear Boy mini-game. Play the chapters now available. Chapter 2: guide the little figure through the mazes of three rooms without touching the screens. Chapter 3: take the figure to the church, going through the door on the right, then up, right, down, right.

Head back into the building.

Achievement: found all four Seals

Go into Larry’s kitchen and switch the Gear Boy on. You see the first symbol appear for a moment.

  • For the “completed all chapters of the SGB game” achievement: open the inventory and start the mini-game, then play Chapter 6, in which you control a cultist through mazes without touching the spikes and find three skulls.

Take the lift to the fifth floor and go into apartment 502. Go left and switch the Gear Boy on for the second symbol. Go out into the corridor and left, to the place where you saw the eye in the hole in episode one. Switch the Gear Boy on, press R and see the third symbol.

Go down to the second floor and into Charley’s apartment, 204. Switch the Gear Boy on for the fourth symbol, and the achievement is yours.

Goal: find the points of paranormal activity, continued

Go down to the ground floor.

  • For the “got Addison to talk about his past” achievement: go to apartment 103 and talk to Mr. Addison.

Go to apartment 102 and talk to Mrs. Rosenberg. Ask her about ghosts.

  • For the “got Addison to talk about his past” achievement: work through the remaining topics as well, until you have heard about Terrence Addison. End the conversation and switch the Gear Boy on.

You find paranormal activity. Press R, and the goal is done.

Sal decides to call on Todd and see whether he has turned anything up.

  • For the “completed all chapters of the SGB game” achievement: take the Gear Boy out and play Chapter 1, in which you steer the little figure across a maze of spikes in search of a book.

Goal: talk to Todd in 202

Take the lift to the second floor and go to Todd’s room in apartment 202.

Todd has found no records of any earlier murders. He has, however, found something about the disappearance in 1987 of seven-year-old Megan Holmes, who lived in this building with her parents.

Looking at the photograph of Megan, Sal notices her crucifix and thinks he has seen it somewhere before.

  • For the “had every optional conversation with Larry” achievement (4 of 8): go to Larry and ask “Have you seen this crucifix?”
  • Achievement: got Addison to talk about his past. Go to apartment 103 and ask Mr. Addison about the tea.

Goal: find Megan’s crucifix

Go down to the basement and turn right in the corridor. Take the CRUCIFIX out of the lost property box.

Sal goes to Larry and shows him the photograph of Megan. The two move to the bathroom, where Larry agrees to try summoning her.

Switch the Gear Boy on. Megan’s ghost appears. Talk to her about everything.

Larry suggests asking David in apartment 302 for a crowbar, to get the boarded-up bedroom door in 504 open.

  • For the “completed all chapters of the SGB game” achievement: switch the Gear Boy on and play Chapter 5, in which you lead Megan to her mother: down, left, down, right.
  • For the “had every optional conversation with Larry” achievement (5 of 8): go to Larry and ask “How are you holding up?”

Goal: get the crowbar from David in 302

Go to the third floor and knock on apartment 302. When David opens the door, choose the first line, “Can I borrow your crowbar?”

David explains that the crowbar is holding up his shelf, which keeps falling down because of the noise the neighbours in 301 make.

Go into apartment 301. Talk to Sierra and help her pick a backup activity for tonight’s party: choose chess tournament from the list. Move on to CJ and help him choose the music: tune the radio to 89.3. Go to Azaria and help her pick a game: choose broken telephone.

Go back to David and take the CROWBAR.

  • For the “had every optional conversation with Larry” achievement (6 of 8): go to Larry and say “I got the crowbar”.

Achievement: finished the puzzle box story

Knock on David’s door again and ask to come in. Once inside, pick the COG up off the floor by the sofa; there is no highlight for it. Open the puzzle box in your inventory and set the symbols in the required order to get the CHIP.

  • For the “had every optional conversation with Larry” achievement (7 of 8): go to Larry and tell him “I opened the box”.

Take the CHIP to Todd and choose “Look at this”. Watch the cutscene, and the achievement is yours.

Achievement: had every optional conversation with Larry

After seeing Todd, go to Larry and talk to him about the box, choosing “About that puzzle box…”. That is the eighth and last of the optional conversations.

Achievement: broke into 403 and talked with Sanderson’s ghost

Go to the fourth floor. Lever the boards off the door of apartment 403 with the crowbar. Go inside and switch the Gear Boy on. Talk to the ghost of Mrs. Sanderson.

  • For the “completed all chapters of the SGB game” achievement: while you are here, open the inventory and start the mini-game. Play Chapter 8, in which you steer a figure to the right while avoiding the cultists.

Goal: search the bedroom of 504

Go to apartment 504. Lever the boards off the bedroom door with the crowbar, go in and switch the Gear Boy on. You see the ghost of Stacy.

  • For the “completed all chapters of the SGB game” achievement: open the inventory, start the mini-game and play Chapter 4, in which you have to cut the power on every floor. Touching one of the cultists sends you back to the start of the chapter.

Go left and climb through the hole in the wall.

Achievement: completed all chapters of the SGB game

Switch the Gear Boy on and play Chapter 7, in which you have to cross the mazes of three rooms without touching the screens. That is the eighth and last chapter of the improved Gear Boy’s game.

Sal addresses the ghost of Luke, who turns out to be the Demon with the red eyes. The Demon vanishes, and Larry is standing in front of Sal, having come to help him.

The white room

Dr. Enon finishes his last session with Sal in custody. The trial is a few days away. As they part, Sal asks the doctor to go up to the tree house.

Dr. Enon drives to the house where Sal lived. It is half-ruined, with boards over the windows.

Playing as Dr. Enon

Go left to the tree house and climb up. Examine the highlighted objects; there is nothing to find. Try to climb back down.

The ghost of Larry appears in the room and asks the doctor to bring Sal to the tree house. Dr. Enon falls through the hatch to his death.

  • Achievement: finished episode two.

The people of episode two

Mrs. Sanderson appears in Sal’s nightmare in the prologue, where he takes Larry’s place and sees her murder with his own eyes. Sal also talks to her ghost once he has broken into her apartment.

Jim Johnson is Larry’s father, Lisa Garcia’s husband. Larry tells Sal about his mysterious disappearance and says that although his mother believes he walked out on them, he does not. Jim appears as a ghost when Sal switches the Gear Boy on beside his photograph in the tree house. He is trying to reach Sal, and out of the fragments only one thing is clear: “you must remember the red ball…”

Todd Morrison is a friend of Larry’s and a classmate of both boys. Sal is sent to him on Larry’s advice after failing to summon Megan Holmes. Like them, Todd takes the paranormal seriously and sets about helping, improving the device that detects the abnormal zones. He finds the information on Megan and helps unlock the secret of Jim Johnson’s puzzle box.

Ashley Campbell is one of the game’s central characters, a classmate of Larry and Todd, and from the third episode Sal’s closest friend. She appears once here: Sal meets her when he comes to Todd for help, and she makes an immediate impression on him.

Gregory Montague appears once as a ghost in the bathroom of apartment 504 while Sal is trying to summon Megan. He blames himself for the deaths of Megan and her mother, Stacy Holmes, and vanishes quickly, afraid the demon will punish him. He also turns up in the Gear Boy mini-games.

Luke Holmes is Megan’s father. Getting through the hole in the bedroom wall into the hidden room, Sal finds him hanged.

David is the tenant of apartment 302, from whom Sal borrows the crowbar for the bedroom door in 504.

CJ, Azaria and Sierra are the students in apartment 301, whom Sal is sent to quieten down because their party is disturbing David.
