Nancy Drew: The Silent Spy Walkthrough

by Alina 34 sections about 23 minutes to read

Nancy Drew: The Silent Spy is the twenty-ninth game in Her Interactive’s series. Nancy goes to Glasgow on the trail of her mother, Kate Drew, an agent for the Cathedral who died when Nancy was a child, and finds that everybody around her, the friendly stranger at the station, the girl at the hotel, even her own handler, is playing a part. This walkthrough covers the Amateur Detective game in full, all three Easter eggs and every achievement, with the Master Detective puzzle solutions at the end.

How the game plays

  • Controls: left button for everything; right button rotates pieces in puzzles. The cursor is a magnifying glass: a hand to take or use, a lit glass to zoom in, a hand with a case to pocket something, a hand with a gear to use an item, arrows to move, circular arrows to rotate, a speech bubble to talk. Films and dialogue cannot be skipped.
  • Inventory: along the bottom, always open. Hover for an item’s name, scroll with the slider if it fills up. Items do not combine, and are sometimes used automatically. Nancy’s phone is on the left, the task notebook on the right.
  • Saves: Documents\The Silent Spy.
  • Difficulty: played on Amateur Detective. Master Detective solutions are in the last section.

Achievements

  • Seeker: find at least one Easter egg.
  • Gastronome: try every dish at the food stall.
  • Keyring: open every locker whose door shows a green light.
  • Golden Archer: shoot the bow at least 7 times.
  • Trapeze Artist: zip-line from Nancy’s room to Bridget’s at least ten times.
  • Charmed: find all seven phone charms.
  • Treasure Hunter: find all 25 coins.
  • Trinket Lover: buy every souvenir.
  • Bomb Disposal: clear the screen of blocks in a minute and a half.
  • Spy: click the spy glasses in the inventory at least 30 times.
  • Piper: play the bagpipes at least eight times.
  • No Hints: finish without using a hint.
  • Quiz Tamer: answer the closing quiz correctly.

Prologue

In Nancy’s room, take the letter from the agency and the photograph from the desk. Watch Nancy’s memory of her mother, Kate Drew. Click the photograph again to pocket it, and you are at the station. Your suitcase is taken; Alec offers to help find it.

Glasgow: the hotel

You arrive at your room automatically. Use the key card on the reader right of the door and go in. Your handler, Ewan, calls. Open the drawer of the left bedside table for coins and a secret message summarising Kate Drew’s work; read the letters and pocket them with the coins. At the base of the table lamp, charm 1 of 7, the Loch Ness monster.

Easter egg one

Go into the wardrobe left of the bedside table and look up at the built-in safe. Enter 4133, Nancy’s computer password from Alibi in Ashes. The first egg is inside; a trophy replaces the menu icon in the bottom left, meaning an achievement.

Back in the room, go to the window and look down at the square. Turn to the table with the glass vase of flowers, sweep the glass cursor over the flowers, click the sparkle for two coins. Leave, and in the corridor meet Bridget, who will wait for you downstairs with some information. Turn right and look at the wall sconce: charm 2, an icicle. Straight ahead and right to the lift, press G, and go to Bridget.

The station square

Talk to Bridget about everything; she goes for a book on Scotland. Take the newspaper from the green bench, read it, put it back, and find a coin in the bench’s left corner. Read the Burns poem on the metal plate of the other bench, and at its left leg take charm 3, an owl. Go to the food stall. Left of the picture, on the pipe by the far wall, a coin. Click the help-wanted notice: earning money decorating biscuits, which you will need.

Biscuits

The sample is on the right, ingredients and toppings above. Put the right topping on the base biscuit and sprinkle as the sample shows. For a shaped biscuit, make the base, add the covering biscuit from the top left, top and sprinkle as needed, then place the shape and sprinkle it if required. Press Done. A worked example of a hard one: olive jam on the base, cover, white cream zigzags on top, the round shape, blue sprinkles, Done.

With some money made, head for the station.

The station

At the souvenir kiosk, buy everything on offer; more unlocks as you go. A coin in the top left lampshade. Cross the hall to the lockers. For the achievement, open every locker on both sides showing a green light, at two coins each. Locker 33 holds coins.

Easter egg two

Open locker 44 twice: open it, zoom out, open it again, and the second egg is inside.

Go on to the ticket office; nothing to buy yet, but remember the place. Look at the leaflets right of the windows. Turn to the lone man: talk to Alec and ask him to find the journalist Moira‘s address. Head for the platforms; a coin by the legs of a bench. Turn at the door marked “Train delayed” and look right for charm 4, a dragon.

A stranger with a distorted voice calls: take the letter from locker 49 and deliver it to Giffnock station. First collect Bridget’s book from the square: Scotland, a Tourist’s Guide. Back at the station, open locker 49 and take the letter; open it, it is only an invitation. At the ticket office take a coin from the window and click the machine on the left to buy a 15-journey pass. Go left to the platform door marked Giffnock.

Giffnock

Look left at a first-floor window for a coin. At the red postbox, take the red SECATEURS lying to its right and post the letter. The stranger calls to praise you, and as a reward you hear your mother’s voice again. The Ten Ravens pub is shut for an event, and you will not be back here. Take the yellow SCREWDRIVER from the windowsill and a PUB MENU from the wall rack; a coin above the window. Return to Glasgow.

Moira

Alec has Moira’s address; talk to him a few more times, then take the platform door marked Bearsden. Moira’s cottage is by the station. She will only open the door for four Scottish dishes: oatmeal parfait, turnip and potatoes, haddock and fudge. The pub menu translates them. Back in Glasgow, buy from the food stall: Neeps and Tatties, Kippers, Tablet and Cranachan. Earn more at the biscuit window if you are short. Take Carson Drew’s call and ride to Bearsden.

Moira Chisholm’s house

Knock, say the order is filled, go in. Moira shares memories of your childhood. At a knock at the door she orders you to hide: turn and go into the built-in cupboard right of the fridge. When the kidnappers have gone, search the house.

At the bookshelf, remember Moira’s instruction and click the teapot to look at its base. Records sit on the shelf too. A coin above the books top right. On the mantelpiece right, charm 5, a vase with rings. In the wardrobe, clamps under the blankets. Open the built-in cupboard: a coin in the cuff of the green coat. Part the clothes and click the fuse panel.

The fuse panel

The number on the teapot is a voltage. Click switches and watch the reading each produces; add up to the target. On Amateur, switches 1, 2, 4 and 8. The panel slides aside on a hiding place. The wooden box will not open yet. Take the KEY to the safehouse at Loch Lomond and the envelope of Kate Drew’s letters to Moira; read them right through. Close the cupboard, turn to the table and take The Clans of Scotland. Bridget texts. Face the kitchen, go to the built-in cupboard, turn round, sweep over the toaster and coffee maker switches for a coin. Leave for Glasgow and take the door marked Loch Lomond; a childhood memory plays.

Loch Lomond: the safehouse

A coin bottom right. Go to the cabin on the left, unlock it and enter. From the door look left and sweep the upper bunk for a coin. Face the television; a coin on the bench left of the book. Take Mary, Queen of Scots from the bench and click the television.

Kate’s last letter says the television code is the date of the Declaration of Arbroath; the last page of Bridget’s guide gives April 1320. Enter 041320. A hiding place opens and Kate’s secret laboratory rises. A coin on the shelf right of the television. Click the monitor and take Ewan’s call: he wants to meet, the access card is in your room’s safe, and the safe code is your room number times the price of haggis at the stall by the hotel. Moira texts that she is home.

On the monitor, open the left folder of Kate’s letters and read them, noting the mention of the poem Jabberwocky, the full version of which is in your suitcase. The other folders are locked. Go to the fireplace, which looks familiar.

The fireplace

Open The Clans of Scotland and note the handwritten word on the first page. Kate’s letters at Moira’s drew the fireplace with letters on the stones. Press the stones that spell PLASTIC. A safe rises from below, but you do not have its code. Leave for the building on the right, the gym.

The gym

Under the sign left of the entrance, charm 6, a bow and arrows. Go in and towards the windows to the bagpipes, which are plainly missing a part. At the information desk, a coin on the bottom shelf. Take The Great Highland Bagpipe from the desk pocket: the missing piece is the chanter, the melody pipe. Open Mastering the Bow for the theory. Go right to the stand; a coin on the targets under the table. Left, the locked case with the bow; a coin on the top towel shelf. Click the monitor by the targets: the record to beat is 37. Click the arrow towards the haystacks.

Hold the left button and wait for a target. Put the red sight level with the target’s centre and release. Targets move at different speeds and distances, so shoot slightly early. Beat the record and the case opens: take the BOW. Zoom in on the mannequin, a coin on the window to the right. Back to Glasgow.

At the souvenir kiosk, buy the chanter. Go to Moira, talk about everything, and receive Kate’s blue diary. Its first page is a coded hint for the safe. Back to the safehouse.

The fireplace safe

Zoom in on the safe. No letter or digit repeats; the top row is given as B E F, so three columns and six rows. Vowels appear only in the middle column of the top two rows: E is placed, so A goes under it. The fifth row has 1, 2 and 9 with 2 after 9: 1 9 2. The fourth row has only the odd 3, 5 and 7 with 7 left of 5: 3 7 5. The bottom row is 4, 6 and 8; 8 is left of 6, and E is above H which is above 6, so 6 is central: 8 6 4. J is above D, above 3, above 1, all in the first column, so D is first in the third row and J above it. H goes second in the third row, the only gap in the middle column. G is directly under C and above 2, the third column. The grid:

B E F
J A C
D H G
3 7 5
1 9 2
8 6 4

Set it with the arrows. Take the CYLINDER, missing one disc; look it over and put it back. Take the box and from it the dragonfly BUG; the flat MP3 PLAYER, which needs a cable; and Kate’s false diary, which read and return. Back to Glasgow.

The Cathedral

At the food stall, note the haggis price, 5 pounds. Talk to Bridget, oddly jealous over Alec. Go to the hotel; a coin on the balcony railing over the entrance. Lift to the seventh floor; a coin above the picture on the right, another above the left lampshade a step on. Your door is 727.

Use the player on the charger right of the mirror: the socket is dead. Open the socket panel and find a listening device, which explodes. Click the player and hear Kate speak of ravens and an archive. A glint in the mirror takes you to the window, where you see Bridget in the room opposite and decide to search it. In the wardrobe, your suitcase is back, but Kate’s things are gone, the Jabberwocky poem among them; a coin in the right pocket. The safe code is 727 times 5, 3635. Take the Cathedral access card. On the way to the lift, a coin in the palm pot. In the lift, insert the card and press the large round button.

The command centre

Talk to Ewan about everything; he has set you up a workstation and access to the archives. Take the arrow, which joins the bow: a zip-line with a hook. The locked desk drawer on the left is out of bounds for now. Go right, step forward, note the locked spy-equipment case, turn right to the archive computer. Click the monitor and the screen. Read the open files. Zoom in on the file with the black lock: ravens and archive, so the password is RAVEN. Note the symbol sheet, the cylinder code, and be sure to open Kate’s note telling you to listen to the record. Open every black-locked folder. A coin on the floor between two machines. Phone Ned, bring him up to date, and ask for a colour copy of the original Jabberwocky. Down the corridor, open the fire-suppression panel on the right and press the buttons: steel shutters close over the servers. Reset everything. At the corridor’s end, in the left corner, the thermostat: set the temperature to minimum or maximum and Ewan comes; ask him everything and get permission to open the spy case. Back to the seventh floor.

The stranger calls: cut the red wire on the station rubbish compactor. Talk to Bridget on the way. At the lockers, Alec is at his post; thank him for the suitcase and ask about the poem, noting his bag on the bench to the right. Through the green door past the lockers, straight on, turn to the bin on the left and cut the red wire with the secateurs. Kate’s voice rewards you. At the hotel, Ned calls, then argues with Carson; a word with your father. Nancy’s door carries Ned’s envelope with the colour copy of the poem. Take it; later.

Bridget’s room

At the open window, use the bow on the building opposite: aim at Bridget’s window, draw with the left button, put the red sight on the spinning target above her window, and release when it stops. Click the window and cross.

Search fast. Under the curtain by the left leg of the dresser, a coin. Slide the landscape aside: nothing. Read the green notebook on the bedside table, noting MacLorthen in the corner. From the armchair, charm 7, a bell. Now her phone, quickly, before she returns.

The tartan lock

Tap the screen. The MacLorthen tartan appears top right, from Moira’s clan book; if it does not, you have not read the notebook. Pick a colour on the right and click the arrows by position; Clear undoes. Order matters:

  1. black, two wide vertical stripes at the edges, bottom arrows
  2. dark blue, two narrow horizontal stripes at the top edges, left arrows
  3. white, one wide vertical, bottom
  4. red, one wide horizontal, right
  5. light blue, one narrow horizontal above centre, left
  6. yellow, one narrow horizontal at centre, left
  7. green, one narrow horizontal at the bottom, right
  8. orange, two narrow verticals at the edges, top
  9. dark blue, two narrow verticals near centre, top
  10. green, one narrow horizontal at the top, right
  11. dark blue, two wide verticals, top
  12. light blue, one narrow horizontal below centre, left
  13. green, two narrow verticals at the edges, top
  14. yellow, one narrow vertical at centre

Read her messages: a hiding place in a bench on the square. Leave through the window.

The bench cache

Tell Bridget that spy-like men are heading for her room; she leaves. At the bench with the metal plate, a coin right of the bin. Unscrew the plate with the yellow screwdriver: a locked cache. Turn every red block horizontal. Latches open in order and only over the round lid with the notch at the bottom; block 5 is the key that opens the others. Slide the chain left or right with the button held as needed. Sequence: 5, 3, 5, 4, 5, 1, 5, 4, 5, 3, 5, 4, 5, 2, 5, 4, 5, 3, 5, 4, 5. Slide the chain right and click the lid. Take the message and decide to carry out Bridget’s errand yourself. Check your money first.

At the kiosk, buy the bag in the bottom right cell: every souvenir bought. On the square, Bridget is back and in the way; ask why she follows you, take her threat, and when she goes, put the bag in the bin, the money moving into it by itself. At the station Alec is absent, a Reserved sign on his bench. A scrap of blue paper in the flowerbed; read it. The green bench is now active: click the seat and place the coloured sectors by ring colour. One solution: ring 2 twice, ring 4 twice, ring 1 once, ring 4 once, ring 3 once, ring 4 twice, ring 2 once, ring 3 once, ring 4 once. Take the note. On the square, look in the bin for spy glasses. The note gives Bridget’s real name.

Take the glasses to Ewan, who keeps them. Outside, Bridget has changed her look and admits to being Zoe; exhaust her topics. Back to Ewan for the real spy glasses, which show hidden symbols and fingerprints. At the station, find Alec’s bag on the Reserved bench, open it, and plant the bug. Ride to the safehouse, click the monitor, the top right icon, then the arrow to play the recording. Nothing useful, so ask Alec directly: his sister has been kidnapped, and he will not discuss it.

Zoe’s raid

The lift card no longer works; Ewan changed the code. Put on the spy glasses: haloes of different sizes round some buttons. Press in order of decreasing size, 4, 2, 6, 1, 3, 5. Step out and watch Zoe cut the case open from behind and steal an exhibit. Discuss it with Ewan and go to the case. The lock on the wall to its left: touch the display and group the coloured squares to clear them, singles included. One order: the yellows at the bottom; the oranges; the blues at the edges and centre; the greens, leaving two singles; the pinks, leaving two singles; the lower browns; the two pinks; the two greens; the two browns.

Take the dragonfly bug off the boots in the case; a coin in the case too. Take the missing DISC for the cylinder. Close the case; a coin on the floor. Go to the lift and press seven: the stranger calls, ordering you to take control of Ewan’s computer. Stay in, press the round button, back down. Set the thermostat to an extreme to sound the alarm and hide: zoom out, right three times, step forward towards the exit, left, and right along the curved arrow. Ewan passes. Go to his desk, open the left drawer and use the spy glasses on the board. Fast now. The clamps from Moira’s are on the right, cords of different lengths with symbols on the ends matching the green elements on the wires; cap each green symbol with the same symbol, no crossings, vertical or horizontal, rotating with the right button. Take the glasses off by clicking them and leave.

Listening to Zoe

Kate’s voice on the phone: Lark betrayed her, there was no cover. In your room, zip-line to Zoe’s. Plant the dragonfly bug among the dragonflies on the flowers. Back, out, talk to Zoe on the way, and to the safehouse. On the monitor, top right icon, listen. Her first line, “From where I come, there I go”, is the key to her safe. Second icon: Ewan’s computer, with a message that the Hound’s image has been received. A torn photograph of Kate appears; reassemble it by swapping blocks.

The cylinder

Open the fireplace safe, take the cylinder, fit the disc. Restore the symbol sequence to unlock five moving blocks, using the archive note and the blue diary. Find the sharp sign, hold and drag its disc to the start. The first block ends in a percent sign; the last block bottom right on the note begins with one, so overlay them and continue to the exclamation mark. The next block is missing from the note but drawn in Kate’s diary; overlay its first two symbols, brackets and exclamation mark, and continue to the snowflake. Find the block beginning with a snowflake and overlay it, and so on through the chain. When all five cylinders turn, the diary gives the presses from the top for each: 8, 3, 6, 4, 7. The message: “Music themes reveal ace.”

Phone your father, talk about everything, and ask for the melody Kate always played at home. Carson will send her composition, but needs time. Go to the gym.

The bagpipes

Fit the chanter. Open the bagpipe book to the bottom right drawing. The reassembled photograph gave the letters G C E E B A D F a C. The holes above the pipe are pressed; the book shows how many are closed for each letter, closed holes turning blue, open ones black. Pull the cord to blow after each. Closing left to right:

  • G: 8 blue, pull
  • C: 5 blue, 2 black, 1 blue, pull
  • E: 3 blue, 1 black, 3 blue, 1 black, pull twice
  • B: 6 blue, 2 black, pull
  • A: 7 blue, 1 black, pull
  • D: 4 blue, 3 black, 1 blue, pull
  • F: 2 blue, 2 black, 3 blue, 1 black, pull
  • a: 3 black, 4 blue, 1 black, pull
  • C: 5 blue, 2 black, 1 blue, pull

A hiding place opens with a vinyl record.

Easter egg three

Play F D C E C A B E E F the same way: F, D, C, E, C, A, B, E twice, F. The same hiding place gives the third egg.

The Jabberwocky note

At Moira’s, exhaust her topics, then put the record on the player on the bookshelf. Kate reads a sequence of colours, referring to Jabberwocky. Take out the colour copy and double-click it; if it does not decode, you have not read Kate’s note in the black-locked archive folder. Click any empty slot, then the letter above; matching slots fill in. The decoded note tells you to type caretakers on the safehouse computer to learn the scientist’s number.

At the safehouse, third icon, password caretakers, apply. Phone the scientist Kate was hiding and talk to the biologist. Back to your room; a childhood memory plays.

Zoe’s safe

Open the book on Queen Mary at the page of strange symbols. Build the words of “From where I come, there I go” from the page and copy down the symbols under the syllables or letters. In Zoe’s room, slide the landscape aside and put on the spy glasses: symbols on the wall. Press them in the order of your phrase. Take the case from the safe: passports, playing cards, and under the wig a coded note that needs transparent stencils hidden round the room:

  • under the rug by the bed’s left leg
  • two on the table by the vase
  • on the dresser, bottom left of the mirror
  • on the chair left of the round table
  • under the left pillow
  • on the round table with the white cloth

Leave and return and some may move. Back in your room, click the surveillance notes and lay the stencils so they cover the sheet without overlapping. The password is PARNITHA.

At the command centre, tell Ewan about the cards. He counts them: one missing. He also says Alec has no sister, he is an only child. Take the deck. At the archive computer, open the red-locked files with PARNITHA. The three folders say the cards must be soaked in water to reveal the formula. In your room, put the deck in the vase of water and go for a word with Alec.

The stranger calls, demanding the scientist’s number; refuse. Talk to Zoe about everything. At the station, accuse Alec of lying; he insists his sister is Grace. Back at your room, horror: a laser beam and gunfire, and you are taken to the command centre automatically. Ewan is gone from his desk; find him tied up in the server room by the thermostat, free him and ask. Back on seven, a letter on your door: Carson’s sheet music. The room is tidied; a laser pointer on the windowsill, a prank. The cards are gone from the vase. Alec appeared very suddenly. At the station, give him the pointer, ask why he staged it, take his notes and read them. Open locker 36 for the deck.

Kate’s box

At Moira’s, take the box from the hiding place and study the sheet music. Notes become letters here; Nancy’s and Carson’s melodies are in the treble, Kate’s in the bass, and long gaps are pauses, which you mark by saying “pause” to yourself before the next letter. A green light confirms each melody.

  • Nancy: E F G G, pause, F E F, pause, E D E
  • Carson: G, pause, F, pause, D, pause, B, pause, G, pause, F, pause, D, pause, B, pause, A
  • Kate: D, pause, A A A, pause, E, pause, B B B B

Take the missing card, the ace. In your room, dip the ace first and take it out, then the whole deck. Assemble the jigsaw from the developed cards, rotating with the right button; correct pairs stick. Take the cards and go to hide the formula. Watch the film.

The compactor

You wake in the rubbish container in unwelcome company. Zoe has opened one lock; the second is yours. Slide the red block out to the right, one route: 12 right, 13 up, 1 right, 2 down, 7 down, red right, 3 down, 4 left, 5 up, red right, 5 down, 4 right, 3 up, 2 up, 8 left, 11 up, 10 right, 9 down, red right, 9 up, 7 up, 1 left, 9 up, 10 left, 11 down, 13 down, red out right.

Zoe gives you a task and a new set of clamps. At Ewan’s desk, open the left drawer, use the clamps and the glasses, and place them as before. Ewan’s computer is yours again. At the safehouse, second icon, read Ewan’s message and remember the coin album in the command-centre case. Fetch the coin from the album there and go to the lockers: drop it in locker 42‘s slot and enter the passage.

The secret room

Forward, look around, study the documents on the makeshift table. The sheet on the right holds the thermostat switch code. On the table to the right, Kate’s letters, and another note. On the square, Zoe talks to you automatically and gives new glasses that take orders and keep her in contact. At the command centre, the link is tested and you are told to distract Ewan. Ewan has locked the thermostat; enter 7 2 6 5 9, raise the temperature to maximum and hide as before. When he passes, step along the curved arrow and open the panel on the left: press B3 and the trap shuts. Zoe wants USB sticks from the servers, marked with tartans from the clan book:

  • Forbes, red: right, the server on the left
  • Cameron, green: right, forward to the exit, right, the server on the right
  • Hay, blue: right, forward, right, the server on the left
  • Murray, yellow: right, forward, left, the server on the left
  • Douglas, purple: right twice, the server on the left

Finale

Turn and take the curved arrow right, your usual hiding place, and open the main computer’s panel. Place the sticks by sudoku: no colour repeats in a row, column or group. Then a biological bomb: three levels of clearing blocks in strict groups, two small, one medium, one large numbered block, in ascending order and touching on at least one side. Watch the ending, answer a quiz question, and admire your achievements. Wait through the credits for the bonus films.
