Secret Entrance Access
- There is no easy way in.
- The only thing you can do in the front yard is push the red
buttons on the pedestals.- The letters on the pedestals are actually Roman Numerals.
- The buttons need to be pressed in a certain order.
- Did you examine that advertisement in the dust bin very carefully?
- There is a number circled on the advertisement.
- Press the buttons in the order V – VII – III –
V- Something happened. Find out what it was.
- Check the pedestal which is different.
Sewer Access
- First, document what all of the controls do.
- The slide switches cause the indicators to move back and forth.
The knob resets to the starting position.- Indicators can only move three positions to the left or right
of center. If a switch would move an indicator out of range, that
switch is disabled.- The object is to get all of the indicators to line up in the
center within only five moves- There are two strategies you can use to solve puzzles of this
kind.- If you are good at algebra, you can write the solution equation
for each indicator and then solve them simultaneously for the
five unknowns. Works first time, every time.- If you want to avoid the maths, you can nibble away at the solution
using logical deduction.- Let us label the switches top to bottom A-E. Now label the indicators
top to bottom I1-I5.
Moving one to the left is -1 and moving one to the right is +1.
The switches do the following each time they are clicked:
| I1 | I2 | I3 | I4 | I5 | |
| A | 1 | -1 | 3 | 1 | -4 |
| B | 1 | 0 | -2 | 0 | 1 |
| C | 1 | -2 | -1 | 1 | -1 |
| D | -2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| E | 2 | -2 | -1 | 0 | 1 |
Algebraic Solution
- This is only if you know algebra. I don’t have the room to teach
you in this hintthrough.- First, create the solution equation for the first indicator.
- Each time you click on “A” the indicator
will move +1, and so on for the other four switches.- The solution must equal -1 to get the indicator over the center.
- So the equation is 1A + 1B + 1C – 2D + 2E = -1
- Now create the equations for the other four indicators.
- You now have five equations and five unknowns. Solve simultaneously.
Logical Solution
- Start with the bottom indicator, I5.
- It is already in the center, so any move to the left must be
balanced by a move to the right.- So there can be only three potential solutions …
- First, clicking C once and clicking B, D or E to balance it
with a two-click solution. Is this possible?- Second, clicking C twice and then choosing two clicks among
B, D or E to balance it with a four-click solution. Is this
possible?- Third, clicking A then then choosing four clicks among B,
D and E to balance it with a five-click solution. If the first
two were not possible, this is what we are left with.- Since we must choose A, there are only six possibilities to
test.Solution
- You must click the following five switches: (1)A, (2)B and (2)D.
- But you must determine the correct order.
- Click the switches in the order B – D – A –
B – D
Emergency Power
Hints
- The object is to rearrange the numbers so that every row and
every column adds up to the same number.- This is actually a simplified Magic Square (a real magic square
would also require the diagonals to equal the rows and columns).- The clue to this puzzle is in the magazine in the Inner Garden.
- The key to puzzles of this type is to pair the numbers up.
- The two end numbers, 1 and 16, add up to 17. The second numbers
in, 2 and 15, add up to 17. See a pattern?- First, arrange the numbers in pairs.
- The first row will be 1 – 16 – 2 – 15. The
second row will be 3 – 14 – 4 – 13, etc.- That solves the rows.
- Now take the first two columns and reverse pairs until the columns
are solved. For example, 1 – 16 might become 16 –
1.- And finally, solve the last two columns.
Solution
Blue Dolphin Entrance
Hints
- The object is to place all of the pieces on the left into the
area on the right. One large piece is already placed for you.- The good news is that there are many solutions to this puzzle.
- The bad news is that I know of no algorithm which will solve
it logically. You will just have to use trial and error.- Place the large green piece above the existing piece and then
place the large red square above it. That will complete a full
rectangle on the right. The rest of the puzzle should now be easier.Solution
Blue Dolphin Pump
Hints
- The object is to pump the water out so that you can get the
Rune Stone.- You must first start the machine by pressing the “Start”
button.- You can then click on fans.
- Each fan will increment the pressure by a certain amount. Take
notes.- You must select a combination of fans which will cause the ”Pressure”
gauge to match the “Diesel” gauge.- If your selection of fans causes the pressure to exceed the
gauge, the diesel will shut down and you will have to press “Start”
again.- Once the gauges match, press the “Pump” button.
Solution
- There are multiple solutions.
- One solution is to number the top row of fans from left to right
1-2-3-4-5, and so on. Then select fans 5, 9, 10 and 14.- Another solution is 1, 5, 11 and 14.
Lobby Mezzanine Entrance
Hints
- The door works on Emergency Power
- The Emergency Power must be turned on by solving the puzzle
in the Maintenance Room.- All four Emergency Power Control Points must be set correctly.
- The locations of the Control Points are on a diagram found in
the Blue Dolphin Mezzanine.Solution
- Set all four Control Points to the right and there will be power
to the door.
Elevator
Hints
- The elevator uses Emergency Power to operate.
- So you must solve the Maintenance Room puzzle first.
- All four Emergency Power Control Points must be set correctly.
- The locations of the Control Points are on a diagram found in
the Blue Dolphin Mezzanine.Solution
- The Control Point behind the elevator must be flipped to the
left. The other three must be flipped to the right.
