Kate Walker, a young ambitious lawyer from New York, is given what seems to be a straightforward assignment: make a quick stop to handle the sale of an old automaton factory hidden in the alpine valleys, then return to the United States.
She does not expect the journey to change her life. As she travels across Europe, from Western Europe to the far reaches of Eastern Russia, she meets a range of unusual characters and locations while trying to track down Hans, the genius inventor who may hold the final key to the mystery.
Her voyage across land and time forces her to question everything she values, and the deal she set out to sign becomes a pact with destiny.
