Omikron: The Nomad Soul
1999, Eidos Interactive Corp., Square Enix, Quantic Dream
The story is described as a good and evil tale that also explores camouflaged totalitarianism and desperate revolution. It ties the game’s concept to reality by defining the player’s character in terms of their actual life, so the player’s own life becomes part of the setting.
After the investigation begins in Anekbah sector, the player learns that the serial killer is actually a demon. Contact with an underground anti-government movement confirms this, and the player discovers that Commandant Gandahar is also a demon posing as human and luring souls into Omikron through the video game being played.
After using supernatural weaponry of ancient origin to destroy Gandahar, the player is invited to join The Awakened. The group works with an ancient religious order led by Boz, a mystical being in electronic form, while the player is called The Nomad Soul for the ability to change bodies at will.
The Nomad Soul then learns that events in Omikron are part of an ancient struggle between humanity and demons led by Astaroth. To stop him, the player must use ancient magical technology and uncover hidden tombs and catacombs beneath Omikron’s surface.
