Fear Effect
2000, Eidos Interactive Corp., Square Enix, Kronos Digital Entertainment
Set around the year 2050, a trio of mercenaries go to Hong Kong after Wee Ming, the daughter of a powerful Triad boss, disappears. They do not work for her father; instead, they plan to kidnap her before his men find her and hold her for ransom. Hana Tsu-Vachel, Royce Glas, and Jacob Deke DeCourt become involved in a search that leads into the fictional Shan Xi protectorate.
What starts as a simple job turns into a conflict with Mr. Lam, who claims his power comes from a pact with demons. Wee Ming is revealed to be a paper doll given life and is meant to be sacrificed to Yim Lau Wong, the King of Hell. Hana and her partners are pulled into violence, betrayal, and repeated confrontations with Lam’s organization.
As the story continues, the group is separated by undead villagers, hostile soldiers, and further attacks. Wee Ming seeks answers about her existence at Madam Chen’s restaurant, which also functions as a brothel, but the situation escalates when her powers awaken and the people around her are transformed into demons. Hana then follows Lam and Wee Ming through a portal to Hell.
In Hell, Hana meets the Black and White Guards of Impermanence and learns more about her fate, while Glas faces the reanimated corpse of Deke. Hana eventually confronts Yim Lau Wong, who explains that Hell is overcrowded and that Wee Ming’s return would allow Hell to expand and consume Earth. Glas later tries to kill Wee Ming, believing she is the cause of the chaos.
