Kickstarter-funded and Greenlit, Unknown Realm: The Siege Perilous has landed on Megafounder, a platform that brings in ongoing funding for Kickstarter projects .

Now, listen up. Unknown Realm is a Classic 8-bit RPG released on a C64 cartridge, with a digital version on Steam to run through a C64 emulator on your PC. How great is that?

Developer Stirring Dragon Games: Unknown Realm: The Siege Perilous is a a new 8-bit medieval fantasy role-playing game that starts out in the ’80s for PC and Commodore 64. It is designed in the spirit of classic RPGs such as Ultima & Bard’s Tale. Boasting a size of 16Mbits, it is the largest 8-bit RPG to be made on cartridge ever.

You want story? Okay! Uncover a mystery surrounding the disappearance of your uncle. While searching for clues, you’re transported to a strange yet familiar fantasy world. It’s here that your quest begins, armed with nothing more than a wooden sword and an unlikely companion. That’s all I’m going to tell you.

Here’s just a sample of what the game will offer: an exploration-focused open world with lots of secret locations; 64 different day, night, and seasonal monsters; intelligent NPCs; turn-based Western-style combat; a Big Box RPG physical edition with cloth map, game manuals, etc. (just like the good old days!); a custom platform for modern systems that delivers a true retro experience; and an in-game hybrid soundtrack that toggles between 8-bit and modern music.

This seems a good time to mention System Requirements (abbreviated): Windows XP+, Mac OS 10.5+, or NTSC/PAL C64/C128 system.

If all of this appeals to you, scurry on over to Megafounder and show your support! Stirring Dragon promises to love you for it.

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal. "I put my heart and soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." - Vincent Van Gogh "I need solitude for my writing; not like a hermit - that wouldn't be enough - but like a dead man." - Franz Kafka "I've been to hell and back, my boy." - Susan Ashworth, The Cat Lady
