OXENFREE – Equal Parts Coming-of-Age Story and Supernatural Thriller
A group of teens unwittingly opens a ghostly rift on a forbidden island
It starts with an overnight party at a forbidden beach on an island dominated by a decommissioned military outpost.
Did I say “forbidden?” Right. But this game involves high school seniors to whom the word represents an invitation.
You are Alex, a rebellious teenager who takes her new stepbrother and some friends to the island where they sneak onto the beach and prepare to spend the night.
Alex brings a radio along. Big mistake.
It seems that certain radio frequencies cause weird sounds to emanate from an inlet on the beach. Cool!
Uh, not cool. Alex succeeds in opening a rift that unleashes nasty creatures on her overnight party. I hate it when that happens.
OXENFREE, the first game from indie developer Night School Studio, has been influenced by films such as Stand by Me and Poltergeist. It will feature voice talent from The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, Tales from the Borderlands and more.
The game will be released in late 2015 for PC. Console versions are also being considered.
Oh, by the way…if you’re wondering what “oxen-free” actually means, Night School has been nice enough to offer the following:
“Oh, right. Depends on who you ask…one version of the story says it started as a German phrase, ‘alle alle auch sind frei,’ which loosely translates to ‘everyone, everyone is free.’ Another side says it was ‘all ye all ye outs in free,’ essentially saying, ‘it’s safe to come in.’ We know it from years of hide ‘n’ seek.”
So I guess it doesn’t mean than oxen are being given away after all…
