Trailers and Screens

Device 6 is one of those games that doesn’t fit into a single genre. It’s a surreal thriller in which the written word is both map and narrator.

It has strong adventure gaming elements, but also takes inspiration from TV, films, music and books. It plays with game and literature conventions, weaves story with geography, blends puzzle with novella and presents an intriguing mystery of technology and neuroscience.

Parts of it could make you feel…uneasy.

Among other things, the game draws on the following for inspiration: Franz Kafka, Agatha Christie, David Cronenberg (particularly Scanners), spy and agent-themed movies from the ’60s, The Prisoner, videogames such as Professor Layton, 999 and Zelda, and technology in general (both old and new).

Device 6 is divided into chapters which are, essentially, big puzzles that must be solved in order to progress. Its story, therefore, is linear.

Anna wakes up in a castle on a remote island, with little recollection of how she got there. All she remembers is an unusually unpleasant doll…

Why are there two identical castles on the island? Who is the mysterious man in the bowler hat? And above all, what is the purpose of the tests Anna is put through?

Discover the answers to these and other questions on October 17th. Meanwhile, have a look at some screens and watch some trailers.

I've been with JA in one capacity or other since 2003. I'm currently website administrator. I'm also a digital artist (my avatar is one of my creations). I write reviews and articles, create graphics and basically help tend the site. It's work I enjoy very much. I love playing games of all kinds, but adventure and RPGs are my favorites (particularly scary/dark/unsettling ones). At the top of my list are The Cat Lady, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Still Life (first one only), Scratches and Culpa Innata. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool recluse and prefer the company of animals, hardware and ghosts to human beings (no offense). And no bio would be complete without my saying that I do NOT care for phones of ANY sort. Further, I think Dell computers are garbage and that Microsoft has become megalomaniacal. "I put my heart and soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." - Vincent Van Gogh "I need solitude for my writing; not like a hermit - that wouldn't be enough - but like a dead man." - Franz Kafka "I've been to hell and back, my boy." - Susan Ashworth, The Cat Lady
