6. Planescape: Torment – Black Isle Studios/Interplay, 1999
This epic RPG quickly made it into many people’s personal Top 10 lists, and deservedly so. Everything in the game makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd through sheer originality: the character you play – nameless, immortal, scarred and ugly as hell; your bizarre sidekick, Morte the floating skull; the wild and exotic setting with its grotesque inhabitants; the expertly crafted story, dialogues, script, basically everything makes Torment a classic in every sense of the word. The beginning is nothing short of spectacular. You awake in a mortuary without any recollection of your memory. Sure, you say, it’s another one of ‘those’. No, because then the floating skull shows up claiming he’s your best friend and you learn about a cryptic message tattooed on your back (I know what you’re thinking, but this game came out before Memento). Once you leave the mortuary, making your way through decaying zombies, you realize this game is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. It’s a shame that some people overlooked it because of its ‘dark theme’. Admittedly, it can get quite depressing at times. Also, dialogues can be very abundant at times but it’s the price you have to pay if you want to play one of the best games ever. The amount of detail in this game is simply breathtaking.
