If
you need further proof that adventure gaming is a worldwide phenomenon, than look
no further than [hyper]media, a high-end new media company located in Cyprus,
Greece. Awarded the “World Class Award for Interactive Media” at the
PROMAX Awards 2000, [hyper]media is a compilation of artists from around the world
who are dedicated to design products for a specific target audience. In the case
of Opsys, the target audience is adventure gamers.
Opsys is
a 3D virtual reality game (very similar to the technology SouthPeak used in Temujiin
and Dark Side of the Moon) that utilizes Myst-like graphics
and full-motion video. Cursor navigation allows the player to pan around 360 degrees
in all locations a la Zork Nemesis as you explore 10 different time periods
in search of 100 coins that are missing from the Museum of the History of Cypriot.
Aiding
your search is a Time Machine (I wonder if Wales [sic] will make a guest
appearance?) that will permit nonlinear exploration as you attempt to solve the
mystery of the missing coins. The playable demo we have takes place during the
fifth century BC, but the full version will let you visit Greek temples, build
a siege tower to a fortified city, explore a Byzantine church, search a medieval
city, or experience the turbulent 1960s.
Travel through time, find the thief,
retrieve the coins–been there, done that, you say–how about a little incentive?
How about a reward of $10,000 to the first person who recovers the entire coin
collection! The Opsys web site will be continuously updated with news,
clues, and announcements as you compete with adventure gamers from around the
world for the $10,000 prize money. Nothing better than a little avarice to make
a game a best-seller.
Opsys is definitely a must-have for lovers
of Myst and puzzle games. Original and inventive, [hyper]media is a company
is a company with a vision and philosophy that may attract a new generation of
adventure gamers. Plus, if you are an expert adventure gamer who finds the puzzles
too easy, there is always the option to play the game in Greek 🙂
Opsys
can be preordered at a special price of $42 until November 20, 2000. As of
November 21, the full retail price will be $48, so if you are interested then
now is the time to take advantage of this special offer.
