I Was a Teenage Adventure Gamer
Prequels I’d Like to See
And a Little About Baldur’s Gate
The adventure genre as of late has been getting a little dry. No decent
games have been coming out lately; the newest adventure game I’ve played
is the Rustin Parr adventure and I was a little bit disappointed,
but no big deal, honest! And of course, all of the new Blair Witch
games are prequels, so, in light of that, I think it’s time that we
name some prequels to our favorite adventure games.
The prequel to Grim Fandango would, of course, have to be entitled
Grim Fandango: Manny Calavera Meets Dr. Kevorkian. Why else would
Manny have to be making up for bad things he did in his previous life?
He killed himself! Hmm … note to self and others: don’t commit suicide,
you just might end up having to work as the Grim Reaper for a very long
time.
The prequel for Monkey Island would be Guybrush, Pass Your
Grog Swilling Test. Grog, according to the series, is a foul drink
that can eat through just about everything As a matter of fact, we all
learned that lesson during the first game. Remember the part where you
had to get four or five mugs and take the grog from point a to point b?
Boy, was that an adventure!
The prequel to the soon-to-be-released Stupid Invaders would be
called What Really Makes These Stupid Invaders Stupid? Of course,
I’m not one to comment on this yet, because Stupid Invaders hasn’t
been released yet, but it will be released soon, so I’m told.
Yes, prequels are abound these days and of course, it’s bound to happen.
I mean, look at the Star Wars prequels coming out. We had Episode
1 come out in 1999, Episode 2 is on the horizon for sometime in the next
two years, with Episode 3 coming out in 2004 or 2005, I can’t remember
which. In movie terms, that’s an eternity.
Speaking of Star Wars, I want to take a few minutes and talk about
the Star Wars RPG that is scheduled for release in a year or two
by Black Isle and Interplay. This game is going to the big one for all
sci fi geeks. Or for anyone who likes adventure, for that matter. From
what I’ve heard, the game is going to take place during the Golden Age
of the Jedi Knights. And way before the Clone Wars that were talked about
in Episode 4.
I hope it will be living up to the Black Isle tradition. I’ve been playing
Baldur’s Gate 2 lately and I’m pretty impressed with it so far.
The storyline is pretty decent, better than other adventure and RPG games
of our time. I mean, at least with Baldur’s Gate 2 the opening
movie draws you completely into the storyline that you are about to play.
You are a child of the Lord of Murder, and you can become a good person
or an evil person, so it looks like it’s not going to be all set in stone
and you have to get to point a to point b to progress the plot. And, what’s
better is that all of your choices will actually affect your character.
Steal and get caught, you’re going to lose some reputation points. That
probably wouldn’t look good either, especially if your character is a
paladin.
Which brings me to something else, new for Baldur’s Gate II are
character kits. Basically, there are more professions to choose from each
class of character. Paladins now have cavaliers (knights), and I believe
there is also a character kit called Undead Slayer or something like that.
There are new character classes for the thief as well, such as the assassin.
