An
Open Letter to the Editor of Computer Gaming World

Since
publishing the article, or as some would call it, “rant,” this morning,
we have been informed by George Jones, CGW Editor-in-Chief, and Jeff Green, CGW
Executive Editor, that the April issue of Computer Gaming World will indeed contain
an award for best adventure game (okay, you dragged it out of me, it’s the Longest
Journey) and that the omission of the adventure genre from the March promotion
for “Best of the Year” awards was an unfortunate oversight.

In
addition, George and Jeff have both invited me to participate in a point-counterpoint
discussion concerning the adventure game genre and whether or not it is dead.
With all respect, I have refused to participate as I do not believe the genre
is dead and that this is a subject that has been driven into the ground.

I
have though offered a counter proposal, that if the discussion were to focus on
a more positive aspect, such as the influence that adventure games have and continue
to have on other genres–i.e., action/adventure, RPG/adventure, strategy/adventure,
hey, even pinball/adventure!–then I would be a willing participant. After speaking
with George and Jeff for most of the day, I do not see where this will be a problem.

I
would like to thank everyone for their help. You do not realize what you can accomplish
and the influence you have on the industry until you actually stand up and take
a stand and I honestly don’t think I have ever been prouder to be part of the
adventure community than I am today.

Randy Sluganski

Randy Sluganski was a true adventure gamer and his passion for these games made him just as important as the developers and publishers of these games. Randy passed away after battling lung cancer for over 10 years. Randy can never be replaced but we would like to light a torch in his memory for what he did for us with his love of adventure gaming. We dedicate this site to the Memory of Randy Sluganski and his love for adventure games.
