Just Adventure original

The Room Walkthrough by Alexander Tait

by Alexander Tait about 3 minutes to read

I noticed this game listed on
the Adventure Maker website (www.adventuremaker.com) as “the best looking” creation
using the Adventure Maker engine to date. The screenshot offered was
amazing. It is a free 50-MB download
from the website. Fairly large-is it worth it? Read on and decide.

Reading through the developer’s “read me” file, I noted
that this game was created as a joke when he was learning to use 3D studio.
It is worth noting that the paintings on the walls are by Paolo Serpieri,
creator of the (in)famous Druuna comic book and computer game based on
the comic books. The atmospheric music is from the Stigmata movie soundtrack
and might be worth a listen.

As is typical with games made
with Adventure Maker (Derek, T’alvi,
Nacah, etc.), the game is point and click. There are several objects that
can be picked up, examined, and even used but this is really little more
than a demonstration of the amazing capabilities of this game engine. And
demonstrate it does. The static images and animations are some of the best
I have seen in any adventure game, let alone an independently produced
one. If for no other reason, download this game for a beautiful albeit
brief experience.

You will need to change your
screen resolution to 640×480 to play this game with full screen as he
claims there is a problem with Adventure
Maker as it “changes your display refresh rate and messes up your desktop
icons when running in full screen”. Perhaps this is a limitation
of older versions of Adventure Maker but I have never experienced it in
any of the Adventure Maker games I have played.

The story is scant. You wake
in an unfamiliar room with a headache and no clear way to escape. You
must find a way out of the room.
A note of
warning, however: the game features adult themes that may offend
some people. See the screenshots for a preview before you download
this
game if you
are sensitive to this in games.

As the author says himself, “if you need hints to complete this game
you need hints to survive in normal life…” but here goes.

Walkthrough
Go to the wardrobe. Take the key. Go to the desk and unlock it with the
key. Open the drawer. Take the key. Use the second key to unlock the
door. You’re free! (As Matthias says on his website, the game can
be completed in twenty seconds).

There are other things to do:

  • -Read the note
  • -Get the DVD from the bottom
drawer of the chest of drawers
  • -Watch the DVD on the TV
  • -Look at the window at left

BUT, that’s all! This
game demonstrates the potential for both developing adventure games with
Adventure Maker and for Matthias Dahlgren as an independent
adventure developer. I look forward to the day he completes his first adventure
game. In my opinion, he could make an independent adventure of significance
to the degree of that found in Dark Fall. If only I could go forward through
time and find out what is in store for us…
