Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem is the thirty-third game in Her Interactive’s series and the first in the new engine. Nancy is fetching a seventeenth-century book of witch-trial confessions from an Austrian castle when it is stolen from under her nose, and then Deirdre Shannon calls her to Salem, where a cousin stands accused of burning down Hathorne House. This walkthrough covers the Steam version on Junior Detective, every achievement and all three endings, with the two Senior Detective differences at the end.

How the game plays

  • Mouse: left button moves (arrows), reads, skips and interacts; right button examines inventory items. Esc skips films and opens the menu, also from the icon top left. Achievements are under Extras.
  • Inventory along the bottom, always open; used items vanish; no combining. Nancy’s phone on the left tracks tasks, calls and takes photos. Puzzle instructions bottom right. Twenty save slots; saves in AppData\LocalLow\HeRInteractive\MidnightInSalem\Saves.

Austria: Moosham Castle

Carson has sent Nancy for the Book of Apologies, Judge Sewall’s account of the Salem trials with the names of the accused. Follow the tutorial with Dr. Elizabeth Hurst advising from behind the door. Open the shutters, pull the cover off Sewall’s desk, read the letter to Abigail Hathorne Woodley and note the highlighted word LIGHT; press the lamp on the desk’s carving; a panel slides out with a keyhole. Look round: the Malleus Maleficarum on the right table, Hurst’s questions at the door, the prayer on the window table, the locked chest by the bookshelf. On the desk’s right side, press the metal plate for a strange key; right-click it, turn it and press its groove to open it; use it on the keyhole. A drawer with a maze slides out: hold the left button and lead the cube from bottom right to top left. The left drawer opens on the Book of Apologies, locked behind bars with the letters A W. Hurst runs for tools; follow her out, Deirdre calls, promise to ring back, turn back: a hooded figure holds the book, throws something down and leaps out of the window in a cloud of smoke. Follow, over the bridge rail, on, to the clearing; the phone rings again and the thief vanishes in blue smoke. Search the spot: a torn plane ticket, a key marked AW, the tin. Achievement: AW. Deirdre needs you in Salem for her cousin.

Day one

Deirdre drives from the airport past a burnt house: Hathorne House, home of a Salem founder and presiding judge of the witch trials; her younger cousin is accused of the arson and will not give an alibi.

The Parry house

Meet Teegan Parry, in a hurry: one question, about the fire. Talk to Deirdre. Mei in the armchair lets you look round. Take the rust remover from the shelf; the bin holds paper scraps: reassemble the note in the inventory, right button rotates, pieces stick when right. Achievement: Creepy Message. Look in the plant pot left of the fireplace: achievement Surprise, a literal Easter egg. Tell Mei about the note. Tell Deirdre you are ready; outside, Ned calls; pick the witch tour or the judge, order does not matter. Click the car.

Town square, courthouse, museum

Teegan texts an apology and her museum’s address. Right to the crowd: Olivia Ravencroft on the stage does the blue-smoke trick and sells her witch tour; ask her everything. The courthouse: protesters outside, a candle in an orange saucer on the steps. In, right, the locked door: the judge is locked in. The far door, lawyer Alicia Cole: no key, but a paperclip. Ask the judge’s leave and pick the lock: lift the pins with the left button held and set them in the centre. Judge Danforth: with the last heir Frances Tuttle dead the house goes to the town, which the protesters resist; nothing on Mei but her record; A W means Accused Witches. Talk to a protester, cross to the brick museum, Teegan behind the counter gives a tour ticket; ask everything. Give Olivia the ticket for the tour tablet.

The Real Witches tour

Find raven symbols and use the tablet on each: the fenced sinkhole in the road; in the museum, by the Puritan Maiden’s plaque and the corner of the memorial plaque; along the brick road right, through the gate into the cemetery: seven steps, look right, the Hathorne House plaque; right, two steps, right, the monument Abigail Hathorne Woodley raised, Little Liberty; the unmarked graves; Hathorne’s own grave. Achievement: Welcome to Salem. The tablet vanishes.

Museum: press Teegan for more; she opens the hidden door to her office upstairs; read everything on her desk and the book from the shelf; downstairs, the books on the shelves and counter (Professor Hotchkiss wrote History of Salem). Courthouse, Alicia’s office: read Colonial Property Law Today. Drive home; Deirdre praises an album’s earlier bassist.

The Parry house, evening

On the porch, pick up the lighter. Mei: “Hey, what are you listening to?”; “Shame they changed bassists”; “Your sister really worries about you.” She opens up; take every branch and return her lighter. Deirdre in the kitchen gives her car keys for a look at Hathorne House.

The forest road

Through the cemetery gate, straight on; Frank Hardy calls and a hanging ghost dummy startles you. Take the flyer fragment from its left shoulder. On to the house: a light in the attic. Lauren Holt behind you: “I need to talk to Lauren Holt”; “No, but I need to learn about her.” Tea in the mansion, every branch; outside, Abigail’s ghost. You wake at the Parry door; talk to Deirdre; Joe Hardy calls; a nightmare. Achievement: Curse, Not Darkness.

Day two

Deirdre promises a kitchen surprise. Take the photograph of the Parry sisters and Lauren from the dresser. In the kitchen the Hardys have burnt the johnnycakes. Cook: a sponge undoes mistakes. Cup, cornmeal, big bowl: one cup of meal; two ordinary spoons of sugar; one teaspoon of salt; one spoon of baking powder. Then by weight, the total with the bowl under 11.7 ounces: milk, butter, two eggs, two of vanilla, nutmeg, then the whisk. Flip fourteen cakes in time. Plan the day; Joe will test a gadget at the cemetery. Phone Dr. Hurst about ghosts, spiritualism and the trials; question Mei; drive to town.

Museum and Radiant Elixirs

Texts from the Hardys. In the museum, hold the fragment to Olivia’s flyers, turning until Nancy comments; question Olivia in her shop. Lauren’s shop, Radiant Elixirs: talk. Optional, for Side Job: at the herb table, the old book of remedies: one portion for mild, two for moderate, three for severe; sage for memory, chamomile for anxiety, milk thistle for the liver, garlic for blood pressure, cinnamon for digestion, feverfew for migraine, ginger for nausea, rosemary for allergy. The locked box’s key is on the table right of the blue-labelled bottles. Each order takes exactly three portions: unbearable pain, three feverfew; the box holds marjoram; moderate blood pressure two garlic and mild liver one thistle; chamomile and two sage; Lauren adds starwort; one sage and two cinnamon. The letter in the book: tell Lauren Alicia wants her, read it, get caught, apologise; Lauren descends from Tituba, the book’s author. In the forest past the cemetery find rosemary; back, one marjoram, one starwort, one rosemary: the truth serum. Achievement: Side Job.

Museum: Teegan gives Damian Falkner‘s number; call him, her alibi holds. Courthouse: Alicia gives the Hathorne House key; the judge with his son Jason; ask for the evidence-room code, refused; phone Carson at the keypad, he fixes it; the judge says the code is on a note somewhere: zoom on his cluttered desk, click the lamp, the yellow sticky, click until Nancy comments. Keypad 0815. The Salem map, the window broken from inside, the shards, the staged break-in; the evidence list on the desk; hold it to each cabinet drawer: 6, 11 and 18 are empty. Achievement: Examine Everything. The camera over the door. Tell the judge: Teegan’s file of claims for the accused witches’ descendants is gone; footage tomorrow. Alicia likes Jason. Talk to Jason at his yellow car. To the ruin.

Hathorne House

The key fits but the door is warped; the crowbar to the right props it. In, left, the blue jacket: Olivia’s card in its pocket. Next room, the mirror right of the door: a laurel branch drawn on it points, mirrored, at the right door of the secretaire; take and read the letter, both sides (or Teegan will not call). Teegan calls: the house is vandalised; she admits what the books say: Samuel Parris and his daughter Betty were the first accusers, and someone is airing it to shame the family. Frank calls.

As Frank Hardy: the cemetery

Joe’s long-wave spectral scanner. Two steps forward: red and green waves; the right knob matches height, the left aligns them; three spots in a circle. Save: scanner tuned. A motion detector on a tree catches every visitor. Into the forest: at the fork, left to the fallen tree, ropes with hooks on the left tree, for moving something; the other way, a pumpkin head, a smoke machine, ash in a dish. To Olivia’s shop: the brochure on Abigail’s disappearance on the left; under the calculator a coded note, a map of gravestones on its back. Cemetery: two steps, right, right, Samuel Sewall’s stone; clear the grass, Olivia’s stand things. The cipher is untranslated even in the Russian release, the phrases are English. Five lines, each starting with a clue: a symbol and letters. Turn the Greek ring so O sits on the clue symbol, the inner English ring so O lines up with H, then Select Letter and, without turning the rings again, move the pointer to each symbol of the line on the outer ring and press the English letter under it: RESTOCK WANDS. Later lines give only a symbol and a Greek letter: leave the inner ring alone, turn outer and middle: GROCERY SHOPPING, INVENTORY JUST DO IT, CAT MAINTENANCE, GET STOCK FROM L. A long film: Olivia admits petty fraud, the brothers meet Abigail’s ghost and flee to the Parrys, everyone compares notes; choose “someone is lying about their alibi”. Achievements: Get Stock from L; It’s There.

Day three

Everyone feels ill; Deirdre suspects ergot; the Hardys will search the cemetery. Offer Deirdre the serum and provoke her. Optional, Breakfast: click a cup, close the book, pick a recipe, flip five cakes; each shape suits someone: cat Deirdre, pirate Mei, witch Olivia, pumpkin Teegan, werewolf Lauren, Frankenstein Frank, ghost Joe. Give Deirdre the cat cake. In town, hand out cakes and serum and ask everything; Mei has locked herself in. Jason at the courthouse. Alicia’s empty office: the black folder holds a demolition contract for Hathorne House signed by Alicia as owner, and a water-main map with an entry point. The judge gives the USB stick; the house is being readied for the state and Mei is to be arrested today. Deirdre is angry; Carson calls to weigh suspects. Optional, Happy Halloween: carve pumpkins at the museum counter, one at a time, for twelve orange saucers: courthouse steps, the museum flyer counter, the Roger Conant statue’s base, the mourning statue by the unmarked graves, under the big tree right of the cemetery exit, the haystack opposite the courthouse, Radiant Elixirs’ counter, Nancy’s windowsill, Olivia’s stage, the Parry porch, Lauren’s steps, the Parry kitchen counter.

Ask Olivia what she ate; Lauren: thieves took ergot and cash weeks ago; tell her about Alicia’s demolition notice. Evidence room: stick in the computer; ignore Danforth’s office, Alicia’s office and the ladies’ room cameras; sixteen frames, 00:00 to 00:15, each showing the suspect: street 00; entrance 01; corridor 02; men’s room 03, 04, 05, 06; corridor 07; evidence room 08, 09; corridor 10; entrance 11; street 12, 13, 14, 15. Achievement: Eagle Eye. The suspect’s car matches the red one outside: examine it, confront Jason, who names it as Alicia’s. Back in the evidence room, hold the water map to the wall map, red oval on the left, until it changes colour: Hathorne House. Cemetery: Ned calls; the Hardys drank tea from Olivia, brewed by Lauren. Fourteen steps through the forest to Lauren’s house: the growth at the corner hides a hatch; rust remover on the valve, turn: ergot. Achievements: It’s the Ergot; Examine Everyone. Explain to Lauren that someone dosed her water. Teegan calls: Mei is gone.

The Parry house

Teegan at the kitchen table: someone published Mei’s old barn-arson file; Teegan read Mei’s messages with Jason; then she confesses the Hathorne fire was her own carelessness, and that Mei has hiding places all over town. Tell the Hardys and leave them watching Teegan; Deirdre drives off in a huff. Mei’s phone is under the armchair cushion: read the messages; the newspaper on the table. Jason waits across the road; ride with him.

Jason’s confession

On the square, open the glovebox: a Boston plane ticket like the Austrian one. Make him confess: Mei has the book and hides in the tunnels under Salem, entered by giving the Little Liberty statue light; rain floods the tunnels. Deirdre’s voicemail; the Hardys will meet at the cemetery. The statue wants a lantern. Olivia texts: she gives a photograph for Teegan and lets you take her lantern. In the statue’s hand, the slab slides; Deirdre calls; down. Achievement: Open Sesame.

The tunnels

One step in the dark, then Mei’s phone shows an arrow and compass: up, left, left, right, right, up, left, right, up, right, left, right, up. A noise; split up. As Frank: left, right, left, up, up, right, up, up; the brothers talk; turn and left, right, up, up, up, left, to a door with Deirdre calling behind it. Save: tunnel exit. The note and the disassembled polyhedron: twelve triangles counted, an icosahedron. Swap parts, highlighted, remembering a moved part keeps its own number: 7 and 8, 4 and 8, 1 and 8; 2 and 8, 5 and 6, 3 and 5; 2 and 5; then drag any part to the fixed centre and it snaps together (if not, back out and restart). Set it in the door. Lift the bookcase off Deirdre, who found the passage hunting the will. The Compendium of Constellations, Feasts of the Wheel of the Year on the table, and Frances Tuttle’s letter, give the pairs on the floor rings: outer ring Yule and Litha; second ring Leo and Taurus; then Imbolc’s dates, 02.02 to 10.31; centre, the elements Earth (triangle down with a bar) and Air (triangle up with a bar). A toy house rises: press the door, the chimney, turn it, tip the table, press the button beneath: the roof opens on Frances Tuttle’s will. Achievement: Family.

As Nancy: Mei on the floor; revive and question her; two letters beside her, one on her admission to Waverly Academy, one from Abigail Woodley to Judge Sewall. Tear the white poster off the wall: an apothecary cabinet with its drawers pulled. Fit the numbered drawers to the lettered slots by their tabs and notches, rotating to inspect; with slots lettered A to P in reading order: 1 A, 2 J, 3 L, 4 E, 5 M, 6 F, 7 D, 8 I, 9 C, 10 H, 11 O, 12 N, 13 K, 14 G, 15 B, 16 P. The cache below gives the Book of Apologies. Talk to Mei; the others surface; Alicia’s voice, water pours from a pipe. Go: up, up, right, up, right, left, right, left, right, right, left, left, up. Achievement: Close Call. In the dark room, ask Mei for her lighter, light the candles either side of the wooden panel and the oil lamp on the barrel. The note under the left barrel; the wooden feather from the barrel behind the lamp; AW carved on the right barrel’s base: press the board above, take the crowbar. Feather into the panel; one more needed. Hold the note to a candle: a drawing. At the brick wall left of Mei, use the crowbar on the brick marked with a cross: the second feather, into the panel. Dust the panel with the button held until Nancy comments; open the puzzle, back out, open again and work the right-hand feathers to mirror the left round the angel: first feather up two, third up two, fourth up two, first up one. A click. Save here for all three endings. Use the AW key on the panel.

The verdict

In the judge’s office with Alicia, make three accusations in any order: she poisoned Lauren’s water; she stole the AW evidence; she was behind the theft of the book. She parries them; a film. To the judge’s question: “We found Frances Tuttle’s will”: Will, the house goes to Lauren. “I have the Book of Apologies, and it at least…”: Book, to the descendants of the accused. “By the Book and the will, Lauren”: Inheritance, to Lauren and Teegan. Reload the save for each. The farewells at the Parry house vary with whether you named Teegan; give Mei the spare cake and Teegan the photograph if you like. Ned calls: Another Case Closed. After the credits, one question: Deirdre’s car, a green convertible; Teegan’s boyfriend, Damian Falkner; Samuel Parris was a pastor; ergot is a fungus. Achievement: Good Memory.

Senior Detective

Only two puzzles change. The cemetery scanner has a third control, a slider between the knobs, for the red lines. The apothecary cabinet’s slots are numbered 1A to 16A: 1 to 4A, 2 to 8A, 3 to 11A, 4 to 14A, 5 to 3A, 6 to 7A, 7 to 15A, 8 to 2A, 9 to 1A, 10 to 9A, 11 to 5A, 12 to 13A, 13 to 10A, 14 to 12A, 15 to 6A, 16 to 16A.
