After the Stranger rescues Atrus, the master of linking books, a new task awaits. Atrus’s wife, Catherine, has been taken by Gehn, Atrus’s father.
Gehn has appointed himself ruler of the Age of Riven and has driven the world toward collapse. He now holds Catherine hostage there, hoping his son will restore the book link to the Age and free him.
Atrus asks the Stranger to travel to Riven and find a way to rescue Catherine.
