Lilli, a young girl at a convent school, is the main character. She seems to be the best-behaved little girl in the world and carries out her chores diligently, even when they are unfair.

Her innocent, imperturbable obedience has something both tragic and eerie about it. Beneath her sweetness, angry thoughts and childlike disobedience are buried, while friendly little gnomes paint over unpleasant things in a pleasant pink color.
