Chemicus: Journey to the Other Side (2001)

This first-person, point-and-click adventure looks and feels much like Myst and Riven. Richard, an avid chemistry buff, unwittingly finds a portal to the strange city of Chemicus and steps inside.

He is captured by strangers in white hoods, locked up, and accused of trespassing and stealing “transmission molecules” that protect their energy source. You play Richard’s friend, who goes to the city to rescue him.

The 3D world includes varied locations to explore, inventory objects to find and use, and puzzles to solve. The puzzles are based on fundamental chemistry, with help available from documents found during exploration and an in-game science database.
