Long Island is home to Mike Callahan’s bar, where people share their personal problems with a friendly, all-knowing bartender and try to drown their sorrows in alcohol.

What sets the place apart is its clientele: mythological beings, time travellers, and aliens all feel at home there. Jake Stonebender, a traveling guitarist with a tragic past, also spends time at the bar and is inclined to help those in need.

By talking with the colorful patrons, Jake learns that several of them need assistance. He helps a vampire find his long-lost love, deals with the moral dilemma of an alien whose pacifist thinking is not approved by the majority of his race, and helps save the rainforest from destruction.
