Broken Sword 2.5: The Return of the Templars is a fan-made sequel that continues the storyline after the first two games in the Broken Sword adventure series and connects events leading up to the third game. It uses a 2D view and point-and-click gameplay rather than the later full 3D style.

George Stobbart leaves Nico for one year because of an important trip to the USA. During that time, his grandfather dies of cancer. While in the USA, George receives a telegram from France saying Nico has died, but when he returns he finds that she is still alive and not surprised by the message.

After the reunion goes badly, Nico asks him to leave. While George is at Cafe della Chandelle Verte in Paris, he receives an alarming message from French inspector André Lobineau about Nico. The story suggests the Neo-Templars may still exist.

Familiar locations around the world are mixed with new settings and characters. George, Nico and André return, alongside Christophe Brai and English historian Jimmy McLaugh. The game uses mouse movement, an inventory, icon-based dialogue trees, and intermittent control of George and Nico, and it is possible to die.
