The year is 1899. Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus awakens in bed, wracked with fever and haunted by dreams of a dark, hellish engine.
He is tormented by visions of a disastrous expedition to Mexico and by the collapse of his industrial utopia. Guilt and tropical disease leave him in a nightmare.
The house is silent, while the ground beneath him shakes at the will of some infernal machine. He knows only that his children are in grave peril, and that he must save them.
