Jekyll & Hyde – Preview

In no way related to the mind-numbingly awful, platform-jumper-in-disguise Jekyll & Hyde released by Dreamcatcher in 2001, German-based developer Pixelcage promises that their Jekyll & Hyde will be a true point-and-click adventure game with some appropriate action elements related to the Mr. Hyde persona.

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s little-read, but much beloved classic novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – or to quote Mark Twain, “A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read.” – the game is set in 19th Century London as Dr. Jekyll seeks a cure for the plague that ravages the city, but unwittingly creates a potion that awakens his alter ego, Mr. Hyde.

As Dr. Jekyll searches for an antidote for both his changes and the plague, he finds himself pulled into the underbelly of London’s sinister underworld and a conspiracy involving an ancient, mysterious sect.

The player must alternate between characters – as each possesses skills appropriate to his personality – to solve puzzles or action-orientated challenges. Each protagonist will be able to develop new skills as the game progresses. Dr. Jekyll will also carry a mobile, mini-chemistry lab so that he can whip up a new batch of potion when needed (shaken, not stirred, thank you).

A 3D engine is being used to add special effects and dynamic camera movements will follow the character’s movements to add more of a you-are-there feel to the game.
