Big Changes Ahead for Nancy Drew/HeR Interactive
Future games to be Unity-based; release of Midnight in Salem is delayed indefinitely

I've elected to post HeR Interactive's August Newsletter verbatim, without comment. Make of it what you will. Note that this is in addition to replacing Lani Minella as Nancy...
Nancy Drew fans — we hear you loud and clear. Thanks to the more than 4,000 respondents who participated in our survey earlier this year, it’s clear to us that you would love to see some changes and updates to our Nancy Drew PC/MAC franchise. Your suggestions for more expansive environments, better visuals, more compelling story lines, longer game play, more characters and more dangerous situations with player consequences got us thinking, and we agree.
One of the major limiting factors that prevents us from implementing many of these changes is our current proprietary game engine. Thus, we have made the exciting decision to move to a Unity-based platform for our games. However, this move will affect our development schedule resulting in a delay in the release of our next game, Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem. At this time, we can’t confirm an exact launch date, but we hope it will launch sometime in 2016. Even though we have started the process of adapting our games for this platform, it’s not something we can do overnight. Working on Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all of us at Her Interactive. We are creating something we are really proud of and we don’t want to compromise on quality. We promise it will be worth the wait.
In the meantime, we are expanding our offering by introducing a new Nancy Drew mobile app next spring on iOS and Android. More information to follow shortly, but we can’t wait to share this pioneering app with you!
Lastly, we want to thank you again for the exceptional ongoing support of Her Interactive and Nancy Drew Games. Our community is at the heart of what we are doing and we’re very much designing our games with you in mind. Your involvement means the world to us.

I am soooo excited for MIDNIGHT IN SALEM to come out in stores. I've been waiting for months, and when I found this, I was so excited! I am real happy that they are making even better changes to the games - like making them longer and more action-packed! I love action and mystery :) I am really gonna miss LANI as the voice of Nancy Drew - Lani was the perfect Nancy! Well, at least its good that they are making some amazing changes to the games! Although they are perfectly amazing just how they are :) Signed: Nancy Drew Biggest Fan! :)

As a diehard series fan, I'm nervous about this news. While I'm not insistent that the series never attempt change or innovation, I think this could lead to another dark era in the timeline as when the games experienced a downhill slide starting with #15 that continued for a couple of years. On the surface, a delay that could last more than a year is disheartening from a company that consistently turned out two games a year and I just hope it doesn't mean a departure from the trademarks that make this series great in favor of slicker graphics and other trappings. The Nancy Drew series has done a great job of proving why point-and-click adventure is still a relevant genre and I hope it continues to do so with this newest installment.
