It’s Anecdotal* is a one-man indie studio run (and staffed) by Philip Buchanan. Prior to embarking on his own development adventure, he worked on other people’s games including Lara Croft GO and Hitman GO. He splits his time between Montreal, Canada and Christchurch, New Zealand and his vision is “to produce concise games that give memorable experiences and have strong atmosphere.” In March of 2014, he ran a successful Kickstarter campaign and began the long trek towards his goal. He is about to cross the finish line and will release 39 Days to Mars on April 25th.

The game begins during the Victorian Era in the year 1876. Sir Albert Wickes and The Right Honourable Clarence Baxter have been awarded the “honour” of piloting the HMS Fearful on her maiden voyage to Mars. However, the ship is a “masterpiece of unreliable engineering” and neither explorer is adept at 19th century technology. Early in the journey, the steam engine runs out of coal and the navigation charts are shredded by the ship’s cat. It’s an inauspicious start to the 39-day adventure as the two attempt to reach the Red Planet in one piece.

39 Days to Mars is designed as a cooperative adventure to be played by two people. It requires two minds, working together, to collaborate on puzzle solutions and to survive action sequences. For those who do not have a gaming partner, the game can be played in a single-player mode with the ship’s computer-controlled cat filling in as your companion.

*Editor's Note: When JA first covered 39 Days to Mars back in 2014, the developer was reflected as Surrealix. It was also under this developer name that the game was Kickstarted.

While Surrealix appears to still exist and reflects 39 Days to Mars as one of its games, the game is also reflected on the It's Anecdotal site. It's Anecdotal is shown as developer on the game's Steam page as well.

Both Surrealix and It's Anecdotal appear to belong to Philip Buchanan.
