Who needs Octomom when you can have this far superior game?Octodad: Dadliest Catch
is a full-fledged sequel to Octodad
, a freeware release about an octopus trying to masquerade as a human from DePaul University's Team DGE2. Octodad
was a Showcase Winner at 2011's Independent Games Festival.
Some of the team's members went on to form Young Horses and are developing a Kickstarter-funded sequel, the silly and hilarious Octodad: Dadliest Catch
Both games are quite unusual. The sequel will feature improved graphics and a fully developed plot, and be a full-sized, non-freeware game.
The two games could be categorized as slapstick comedy. Octodad's existence is a struggle as he tries to master everyday tasks using his boneless tentacles while trying to keep his true nature a secret from his human family. To a certain degree, players will have to suspend disbelief in order to accept that no one has noticed what Octodad really is.
His cephalopodian nature makes Octodad deliberately difficult to control. Players will try to guide him as he lurches and stumbles through the game, attempting to perform different tasks. His controls are similar to those of a marionette. He drags his arms and legs around as his body flops along.
Anyone who is uncoordinated should have a good time playing Octodad: Dadliest Catch
. But it's also a game about social anxiety, alienation and other serious issues.
The game will be released in early 2014 for PC, Mac and PS4.
