Status : Online | I have a tattoo, and mine HURT like h3ll when I got it. But people's tolerance for pain varies. The pain also seems to depend on where the tattoo is placed - locations with lots of sensitive nerves and little fat (like tops of feet, neck, and base of spine) can hurt a lot. Other, less sensitive areas with more muscle/fat padding (like the upper arm or tush) seem to be less painful... but not completely painless. (Remember - there are women who say childbirth "wasn't too bad" either - so take into consideration the effect of "forgetting" the pain when asking people about their tattoo pain levels.)
The healing process was annoyingly itchy - you basically get a mongo scab that you are not ALLOWED to pick at AT ALL - so it itches itches itches itches!!!! (never underestimate the annoyance of itchyness for several weeks.) You can take a shower after you get the tattoo - you just have to keep bathing time short so that the scabs don't get soaked through and fall off prematurely.
My recommendation - draw your design on your neck with permanent ink and "refresh" it when it starts to fade. Keep it on there for at least a month before you decide whether or not you want a tattoo at all, or at least in that location.... After all, tattoos are forever (or the scar from laser removal - not pretty.)
(I've also designed 3 tattoos for people )

Anyway, I want it on the back of my neck! My friend, who is an artist, has offered to design it for me. So I've been looking on the net to get ideas, etc. Lower back works better for me - :
Damn I love those things....

Darn... I just don't know what I'm going to do with this old crumpled up $100.00 bill then...
My youngest daughter has one on her lower back, the oldest on her ankle.

But I didn't get mine to show off... I got it for myself. So the fact that people don't see it much doesn' bother me.

AZ - oh by god, I didn't marry your daughter did I?
My wife has a small rose bud on her ankle. She had it there before I met her years and years ago. It drove my really conservative mother crazy when my wife and I were dating. My mother would talk to her and instead of making eye contact, would stare at her ankle.
Caroline, I think the ankle doesn't wrinkle.
I would never be able to get a tatoo because I change my mind too often.

The youngies seem to favour the tiny motifs but I'm just not interested in a) the needles and pain bit, and b) the permanency - I too would change my mind.

Really? All my female friends have one! I have made my decision on what and where, but am going to keep it a secret for now. I promised my friend we would go together and she's about six weeks away from giving birth. After she's sufficiently recovered, we're off to the tattoo parlor! I can hardly wait! I'll send you a pic....I think you'll find it amusing

That and the fact I absolutely HATE needles. Having one puncture my precious skin once is bad enough. Again and again and again hundreds of times over? Nope. I'm afraid a pierced ear is about as daring as I'll ever get.

Be honest.....how much pain can I expect? Well Michelle , a tattoo you're considering ... Myself , I have three . Placed on my right breast , right shoulder , and my right bum cheek . Why the right side ? Just because , I guess ... Cheers

Status : Online | I don't know anyone my own age who has a tattoo. Wait, a friend of mine just got a tatto, and she's I believe 2 years younger than me (I'm, charitably, late middle age).
I'm just glad they weren't popular when I was young. If they were, I would have gotten one or more, and probably would have made very poor choices on image and placement. By now I'd be shelling out good money to the dermatoligist, getting them removed. Perhaps many of the people getting them today are making better choices on what to get and where, than I would have made.
Good luck!
Regards, mszv

She said it hurt like heck and then she looked down at it only to see one of Minnie's feet was completed ... there was still a long way to go!
Funny thing, though. She got it on the front of her left lower abdomen. She's also due to give birth to her second baby this weekend. Boy, I'd love to see what Minnie looks like now.
I was thinking along the lines of a tiny rose, butterfly, or a Harry Potter lightening bolt scar....lol. Along the lines of not tattooing your boyfriend's name on your arm, I also would recommend not getting something realted to popular culture. In other words, a lightening bolt, yes. A Harry Potter-esque lightning bolt, no. Who knows if that will be as popular 20 years from now? I'm reminded of two things:
1. A classmate who announced last year of the tattoo she got of the Evanesence logo after seeing them in concert (and being drunk).
2. A quote from The Simpsons ... Homer: "I recommend getting a tattoo, it preserves the things you love. Looks at heart-shaped tattoo on upper arm and comments about what it says. Starland Vocal Band? They suck!"
Just my two cents.
I miss my Bubba: 1986 - 2006.

We could only think of the discomfort of having it done!
Just my contribution to lowering the tone of this thread. [smiley=raise_eyebrow.gif]

What gets me is the willingness people exhibit allowing total strangers to see and handle and tatoo their private bits. Ditto for piercing too. ouch! [smiley=eww.gif]
