This is my first Poll, so have mercy.

I figure that if The Dark Eye, Alone in the Dark, and the Gabriel Knight series can all be given this prestigious honor, then certainly Sanitarium should be considered as a contender.

I've rallied Sanitarium several times for this honor, but so far - no award.

Despite its few flaws and teeny quirks that turned off a couple of Adventure Gamers (only two), I rally behind this game 100%, and hope one day the Powers That Be will bestow upon Sanitarium the greatest of honors:

To be listed in the The Just Adventure "Hall of Fame"!

What say ye?

Please say "yes". I'll send you a doughnut.

I confess.
And just sugar please.
I have been building up my collection of games based on J.ad.reviews but I think they have made some crass mistakes also regarding handing out A`s.eg.MotD,ND,DoDI.
I have only played the beginning of Sanitarium because I must finish others first. But it seems to be Hall  of Fame calibre.

Definitely! Truly a beautiful (and haunting) game that has stood the test of time well. Sanitarium is in my top 5 of best games ever.

What? It is not in the Hall of Fame?

Traversity! Sanitarium is a fine adventure game which deserves to be rated up there with the best.

Deleted UserI agree tha Sanitarium should be there, but so should Obsidian.  Both are unique games that have stood the test of time.

A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y! Sanitarium has one of the best atmospheres I have seen in an adventure. In my top-5 adventures list as well.

I agree that Obsidian should be in the JA+ "Hall of Fame" as well.

But that should be a different Poll.

Jenny or Fairygdmther, why don't either of you start an Obsidian Poll? Somehow, I have this sneaking suspicion - and I think it has to do with the rather droll lead voice-acting of Max -  that Jenny100 voted "No" in this Sanitarium Poll. Jenny, just think...umm...doughnuts...

I think, it definitely should!
It's not even a question!
The only question is, Which Game Should It Come Instead Of?  [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]

Hmm... Maybe you should start another poll, Mark?

Do go on! I always yawn, when I'm fascinated!

Thananda, I would, but I can only rally behind one fabulous game at a time; fight one battle at a time. Blame it to a short attention span.

I'll let Jenny100 or Fairygdmther start that Poll.

Seeing how it came in at GameSpy for "Scariest Games" at #4 (of ten), our own Randy Sluganski gave it an "A" review, and so many people have mentioned how they love it, I thought it was time that Sanitarium be considered for the illustrious JA+ Hall of Fame.

I voted yes on Sanitarium. I have no idea who voted no. Maybe one of those posters who click the "I don't play games" response that's included with certain polls.

[smiley=sorry.gif] I bow down my head in embarrassment and shame. Please - can you find it in your heart to forgive me?

One of the best endorsements a game could ever have would be a recommendation from you, Jenny100.  [smiley=bowdown.gif]

Thank you.

Mark, I can't vote because I haven't played it, but it seems to have gotten high marks from many players.

LadyK., are you in Florida? If you don't have it, try your local Wal-Mart [smiley=zombie.gif]. It won't be in a big box nor a "medium" box, but a small box in the discount section - less than US$10.00.

If you can't find it and want to play it, email me.

Thanks for your kind advice, Mark, but the problem is that there's no Mac version of the game as far as I know.

(BTW, I'm from New Jersey.)

Lady K., isn't there some sort of doo-dad you can install in your Mac to play a Windows/PC game?

Help, anyone?

[smiley=doh.gif] Oops. That's right. New Jersey is "The Garden State", not Florida.

Florida is "The Sunshine State". Gack.

Whaddya expect from someone that lives in "The Peach State"?

The pits, that's what.

So, Mark, you're a peachy keen guy from Georgia!  That's a mighty pretty state you have there.

To answer your question, yes, there is a virtual Windows emulation program for Macs, but I've heard it's bug slow and not very reliable for games.  I may eventually buy a Windows machine, but in the meantime, I've got a backlog of older games that will keep me busy a good long while.

Deleted UserI know of one adventure game reviewer who regularly plays PC games on a Mac via the virtual PC emulator, so I think it should work for a game like Sanitarium.

Yes yes yes yes yes!  Sanitarium is BRILLIANT, and should absolutely be in the Hall of Fame!  I just finished it a few weeks ago, and it was amazing.  This is one vote I'm NOT undecided about!!

Fickfack,
One of the reasons I have a Mac is to avoid the problems that often arise with Windows.  I would really prefer to keep the systems separate.  However, when the time comes, I'll be asking for advice.  My first computer was a Gateway laptop, but I wasn't playing games when I had it and didn't keep it long.  I also used an IBM with Windows 98 when I was working, but gaming was not one of my activities there.

Anyway, to get back to the topic, I expect that I will eventually play Sanitarium.

I voted no because I felt the main character's voice acting was stiff and wooden and it really detracted from the experience for me.  A very good B+ level game, but not hall of fame worthy IMO.

I agree with jujigatame- Sanitarium is a good game, but not worthy of Hall of Fame status. I think the Hall of Fame should be reserved for games that almost universally are considered top games. Sanitarium was one of those games that people were ambivalent about- some really liked it, some really didn't. Also, it is a little on the quirky side.

FWIW, I don't think these polls really prove very much. People who liked the game are more likely to vote whereas those that didn't like the game just won't bother.

The future ain't what it used to be!

But you could say the same thing about The Dark Eye, and that's in the Hall of Fame.

Currently in the Hall of Fame are

  1. Myst
  2. Alone in the Dark
  3. The Dark Eye
  4. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
  5. Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within
  6. Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned

And there are certainly people with issues about these games. That doesn't mean they aren't unique and original games.

The JA+ description of the "Hall of Fame" is

Some adventure games are heralded as the next coming ... and end up in the clearance bin. Others seem to slide between the cracks and make such a minor impression that we cannot remember whether or not we played them. Many more sit unfinished on our desks. We promise ourselves that we will someday finish them but know deep down that we never will. Yet there are those few games that transcend all boundaries, that appeal to all adventure gamers. These are the gems that we all own or have played and completed at one time or another. These are the games that deserve entry into the Just Adventure Hall of Fame.
