hey, I don't make this stuff up, press release below, I've taken the liberty of bolding my favorite line:

CHICAGO – October 26, 2004 – Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY), a leading software industry publisher and developer, announced today that its most recognized and successful franchise, Mortal Kombat will be extended to the action/adventure genre with the release of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Slated for release in Fall 2005, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is currently in development for the PlayStation ® 2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox ® video game system from Microsoft.

“Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is an Action/Adventure title that will help to expand the already wildly popular Mortal Kombat universe well beyond the fighting genre,” said David F. Zucker, president and chief executive officer. “Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something that Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the Mortal Kombat universe every year. We are planning our Mortal Kombat release schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new Mortal Kombat title annually.”

Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks is an Action/Adventure title driven by both intense single and multi-player action. Similar to the recently released Mortal Kombat: Deception, background interactions (i.e., acid pits, living trees, spiked ceilings, etc.), multiple new fatalities, and action-based puzzles will also play an important role in the player’s quest for an “outstanding” victory. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks will feature an impressive line-up of Mortal Kombat characters, as well, that make frequent appearances as enemies, in boss battles and during several additional in-game interactions.

“For the first time ever, Mortal Kombat fanatics will get to explore all the mythos and rumors of the Mortal Kombat universe from an entirely new perspective. Action/Adventure fans will be blown away by the intuitive kombat system, puzzle solving and epic storyline that can be experienced in either the single player mode or through co-op play,” said Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon.

Well... action-adventure. Not quite the same thing, but it's still amusing

I always thought MK were great adventures. The fatalities puzzles were simply awesome!

What I always liked about MK was it's deep background mythology. I don't know if any of you had a chance to read it but it's very interesting. I also like  the variety of characters and how they are all involved into storyline. If you get the chance to read the mythology do it.

What I always thought was funny about MK was how I usually would find kids from 8 to 15 years old playing the game at the arcades all day, shouting "cool" at everytime a fatality was shown.

"Hey, look! He ripped her lungs out, stuffed them inside her mouth, peeled her skin off and then p***ed all over her face...coool!" :

After reading a lengthy article in the latest issue of Game Informer about Shaolin Monks, they really outta strip the "adventure" tag out of the action/adventure description.  This game is 99.999999999% pure action.  I guess it comes down to what the definition of adventure?  They think because Shaolin Monks has a storyline and there are a few basic action related puzzles thrown in that they can label it an adventure  hybrid?  Funny stuff.  The Silent Hill games are all way more valid as action/adventure games than this one looks to be.

I was always a Street Fighter man myself, but I actually had to give the Mortal Kombat series credit when they started having wierd things like Friendshipality (Where instead of ripping someone's still beating heat out of their chest, you blow them a kiss, or give them a present or something) and Babality (where you can in fact turn your opponent into a baby). Mortal Kombat never made the mistake of taking itself too seriously. It may have at times over estimnated it's "kewlness" but otherwise it always new it's place.
