Byron of Dreamcatcher phoned early today and promised they would have a solution later today for those (like myself) who are having trouble with the fourth level of the arcade shooting gallery in Wanted in which you must shoot 30 targets, but they do not pop-up quickly enough.  Try this:

*Spoiler Alert* Here are some hints that will allow you to progress through the Fairground shooting gallery with more ease:

Once you arrive at Einstein’s Fairground, switch the can of adulterated oil that you bought from Willy with Arturito’s can of restorative oil. You are then informed by Einstein that you can win the Winchester 73 by completing 4 stages of the shooting gallery and then finally defeating Arturito.

In each stage, you must shoot the red bad guys. Don’t shoot the blue innocent bystanders, or the game will end. In between shooting the red bad guys, try shooting random shots into the sky above the buildings or where there are no blue innocent bystanders. This will increase the frequency and the speed in which the red bad guys appear and you will be able to complete the objectives of each stage much more easily.

After completing the 4 stages in the shooting gallery, you will defeat Arturito right away because he drinks the wrong can of oil. Einstein is not pleased! Now you have the Winchester 73 - an important weapon if you are to defeat Starek and his men.

Good luck with the rest of your adventure!

How about a small thanks for the information :
You seem to have such a chip on your shoulder on this issue. There are many games where something makes almost zero sense to someone :-/

Perhaps you were too accurate and the game 'expected' a mere mortal to miss once in a while thus in effect speeding up the 'bad guy' delivery?

I do appreciate Randy staying on top of this issue, but I have to agree with BacardiJim. Why would you possibly design a game that is impossible to win of played well? Shouldn't 50 bad guys just pop up in the alotted time no matter what so you have a decent chance to hit 40? That seems to me like it would be easier, not harder, to program than basing the enemy pop-up rate on the shots fired rate. Especially if that ratio sets players up for failure.

The game is still buggy and there was one year between the European and US release. How lazy of Revistronic, they could have patched the game before their big USA release. I'm going to keep my money for Moment of silence and Legacy: Dark Shadows.

Buy Sherlock Holmes the case of the silver earring, it's only 19.99$

Reduce your screen resolution to minimum (I used 640x480) for the shooting gallery, too! It makes a huge difference. I went from getting only around 20 targets to getting 40+ with this change.

Deleted UserAccording to the previous (longish) thread here on JA+ ..................

the very best way to overcome the shooting gallery is described by Andromus (and previously, in the Review by Gordon Aplin on Quandaryland)

~~ Andromus ~~ ... Wow. I've just gotten through level 4 just now, with infinitely less trouble than I was having, a complete turnaround from my woes of last night. Here's what I did. I turned off my anti-virus software and firewall, left the mouse sensitivity alone, but cut the in game detail down to the lowest setting.

Deleted UserSounds to me like the engine is a big, fat memory eater - good for the sections in between but rubbish at creating a large amount of targets to shoot and slowing down.

This isn't a bug in the programming per sé, it's more a bad design choice built around the engine they were using. Hence NO PATCH, and reduced settings... you should if you're not online by rights ALWAYS turn off your firewall and AV software when playing a game. Those things take up a lot of memory and will slow it down further!

Seeing as it's such a small portion of the game, I wouldn't go on the rampage and start boycotting it as people would miss out on the rest, which I've heard is worthwhile. Being reactionary doesn't help. Besides, I could react against a ton of the problems I found with Sherlock and say the same thing - but I thought the game was worth it.

I've also encountered bugs on the TMOS demo recently released, and my guess is it's in a reasonably finished state now with the release two weeks away. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to at least look at it in a positive light if the rest of the game is great.

The Gamespot reviewer says in his review:

It's hurt by many sloppy or ill-conceived gameplay mechanics, some major bugs (save often near the end)

This is what I don't understand, is Revistronic busy with another game or they didn't care about the bugs? They had almost a year...

There's a patch for some of the bugs here
http://www.3dgamers.com/news/more/1096480083/

Unfortunately not for the shooting gallery.

Since I couldn't even get past the 3rd level at the online practice site, I have zero confidence I could get past the 4th level in the game.

I just completed the game (with patch installed) and I had a lot of bugs too. Crashes mostly, and really nasty ones that didn't go away till I loaded an earlier save.

The shooting gallery was fine for me though. I could have almost beaten the robot without switching the oil. My record was about 49 in the 4th stage or so and 'Fast Shooting x11'. And my resolution was 1280x1024 with max details (AthlonXP 2000MHz, Radeon 9600). From reading this post and my own experience it seems to work like this -- the faster you fire bullets the faster the bad guys appear. Doesn't make much sense indeed. But there were many of these small issues I had with the game that make it seem like the programming was sloppy.
