| Deleted User | I refuse to use spoiler alerts in a thread that is dedicated to the discussion of adventure game endings. That's friggin' ridiculous! How can we discuss game endings without automatically "spoiling" them? Or do you expect us to merely list games and have zero discussion of them?
It should be obvious to anyone who sees the topic title what the thread is about. Anyone who fears spoilers has no business reading the thread in the first place!
"Use * spoiler alerts * if you're gonna discuss the actual ending.... " Might as well say "I posted a public discussion topic but don't really discuss it publicly." :
Grrrrrrr........ I have lost all patience with the idea of protecting people from their own stupidity.
Errr.... just an opinion. [smiley=soapbox.gif] [smiley=sorry.gif]

Thanks for taking my little rant in stride, Cultura. True grace.

I've played worse games, but that one annoyed me a bit.

I was also disappointed in the ending of Myst, which I played for the first time when the Masterpiece edition came out (and after I had played Riven). After all that exploring and those wonderful puzzles, my reward was to...explore some more! I think they resolved the story better by adding the Rime age in RealMyst.

I don't like games where you're doomed to failure at the end no matter what you do. I suppose the "worst" ending would be the biggest disappointment, and that would be a tie between Black Dahlia and Monkey Island 2. Both took me a long time to finish and when I finally did finish, the main character was worse off than when I started. Some payoff.
This list doesn't include what I consider "non-endings" or endings that were such that I ended up laughing at them. Myst and Comer are examples of the former. Reah, The Arrangement, and Frankenstein are examples of the latter.

In fact, I didn't immediately realize that's what had happened since you don't actually see anything. It's nothing but a black screen with sound effects of tires screeching, then a splash.
Nevermind that James had parked his car on the other side of town. I had a vision of it dropping out of the sky, the same as it did in Sam & Max Hit the Road.

You know my problems with the end of DF, and while I "got" the end of LO, it was way too abrupt)

But for worst ending I think I gotta go with MI2. And then that idea was brought back for the end puzzles in MI3.

That was one of those endings that made me laugh - the ship "wagging its tail" as it flew off.

Maybe, but you lost the treasure and then (possibly) drowned.

I'd forgotten about that one. But you're right, it made no sense at all. Terrible ending.

A distant second would go to Omni Adventures for Riddle of the Sphinx and The Omega Stone where both games end with the Professor Dude walking in to pat you on the back for a job well done and then lecturing you on what the whole game "meant".
I would also have to give the "slapped on" ending to URU (the complete chronicles) a big thumbs down. Only because the game was originally intended to be so much more.

Wait a minute... I never did!
Myst could have the worst ending I've ever experienced. I was like... uh? That's it? Oddly, I can't think of any other endings that really bothered me. Maybe Curse Of Monkey Island - too short and lame.

RotS had one of our very favorite endings ever. >
