illogical:
opening the cemetary gate with the file - Huuuuh? I can understand how someone MIGHT come to the conclusion that a file opens a gate, but this is really far-fetched. The most ridiculous puzzle in the game.
clever: scratching the tiles - Removing the tiles under the door was a stumper. I never thought of moving the mouse for a puzzle. It made sense. But it kept me stuck. A very clever imitation of the fish-the-key puzzle.
the calendar - This was a cool puzzle. Quite simple if you think about it.
most annoying: transformations - The puzzle with the elemental transformation and all that. It was rather predictable that something along the way of this would be included. I didn't like it very much. Though I think it was imperative for the plot.
ending: sacrifice - This seems to be the most controversial ending. I've completely forgotten that Brent still has that healing herb in his possession. He planned this on long terms. I think it is one of the best endings ever in an adventure game.
Imagine, our couple tries to save the world from the outcomes of the Last Ritual and that very moment Brent takes the rod and everything should be fine Serstan appears. It is obvious. This had to happen. By this time Brent realizes there is no way to stop the ritual from happening. They had lost the game.
There was just one thing left that could turn the whole affair and that had to be about strange rituals. an odd spell (like the salt curse) or something plain and simple like an oath. Even the most evil beings have to play by the rules. Serstan sheepishly agrees that Melanie will never suffer any harm. Ok, the story turns away from the last credibility it had left to this point. But it's playing by the rules of the game as established during its course.
At present Stonehenge Brent executes his plan. He stabs Melanie and therfore breaks Serstan's oath. As much nonsense that might sound. There is nonsense in many games. That's fine with me. Afterwards he takes his healing herb and we have a happy ending. But one with a sour taste for many people.
Brent played a trick on evil. By something as banal as a simple oath. Like children's play. That's the message. After all the brutal slaughter and struggle for power a simple childish oath is the key to saving the world. Brilliant.
Hands down, it is easy for the game to appeal to me, because I liked its style from the very start. There was almost nothing - not even crappy dialog interface - to spoil that. I really like that ending now. In just minutes it turned from a shock to a masterpiece.
