Deleted UserGreat closing party!
It always amazes me how they can organize these things and make them work. Partying will go on all night in the city I'm sure... The Swedish commentators got interrupted at one point because they were covered in balloons and all the TV commentators got caught in a big balloon fight.
We had a greek/Swedish commentator who explained all the songs and dances etc. Maybe the singing went on for a bit too long for me, but on the other hand I didn't know them and apparently all of them were sing-alongs that everyone in Greece knows, so they must have had a good time watching...

Anyway, the games were great fun to watch and it's truly special when the whole world joins like this.

And China... My are we going to be in for an opening show in four years!
Somehow I suspect that the land that invented fireworks wants to remind the world of that, don't you think?

I feel sorry for the Brazilian marathon runner that got attacked in the lead, but apparently he was going to receive an extra medal for that... Anyway, no marathon runner in the world could get a bigger price in their lifetime than this, being on home grounds for the sport etc. BTW: Why can't the marathon women have their medals in this ceremony?

Anyway, the party athmosphere really radiated from the TV screen back here and I wish I was in Athens tonight!

That marathon runner thing was terrible wasn't it?

So how does everybody else feel about Paula Radcliffe?

I've really enjoyed the olympics this year, and probably watched more of it than I ever have before.

However, and I don't really want to be the grumpy naysayer, but the closing ceremony just seemed to me to be a bit, well, pointless. They'd clearly spent a massive amount of money on it, but for an event which celebrates worldwide brotherhood might have been better channelled to the humanitarian crisis going on in Africa. It was pretty clear that none of the athletes were in the slightest bit interested in the last hour of pop-cheese (understandably), same applied to the commentator on TV and me at home wondering when on earth it was finally going to end.
Maybe I'm not so wowed by fireworks and sequined pop muppets with nice teeth (apart from the dodgy old guy with the ratty pony-tail) but a dignified close would have been nice. The Bejing section did impress though - made me want to be there in four years time.

Someone please tell me what the controversy is about the marathan runners?  I'd rather hear the condensed version than sit in front of the box for hours watching it....

A Brazilian guy was leading with 4 miles to go.

Some looney nut job (Former Priest) wearing a sign about an Israeli prophecy and the second coming jumped onto the race track and shoved the racer into the crowd.

The Brazilian was overtaken and came 3rd.

Generally I enjoyed the Olympics.

It looked very well organised and the sport was great. Only a few things marred it.

* Constant overturning of results and getting lawyers involved in sports :

* The Greek crowd disrespecting the 200 metres final runners to protest against a drugs cheat (Allegedly)

* The idiot priest above

So overall a fantastic success for Athens.

Deleted UserThe drunk Irishman who attacked the marathon runner was the same guy that ran onto the track wearing the same clothes in last years F1 Grand Prix in Silverstone, England. Fortunately no one was harmed back then. This also stands out as the only security problem in the whole Olympics, which seems to have worked really well. The American and Israeli troops in particular reports great satisfaction and a feeling of safety all the time. They had extra security around them, but anyway... One billion Euros spent only on security!

Keep them coming, I like reading feedback..
I agree that the ending ceremony was, unlike the amazing opening ceremony, a bit kitchy and probably too ethnic for the remaining of the world.

I caught some of the closing ceremony on the telly and I have to say I liked what I saw.  The dance of the islands and a whole bunch of people dressed in bright clothes carrying brightly coloured plastic objects that one might take to the beach.  I loved that.

You know something?  Glitter and gloss are ok but really using everyday stuff in a fun way just brings it all down to human scale.  Not kitschy at all.

Now all you have to do is sweep up the streets after the party and let all those stray dogs back out again.

And I saw that runner and the looney.  Really, he should be prosecuted and then locked up.  What a horrible thing to do.  It has nothing to do with the end of the world, stopping an athlete and everything to do with infamy.

Deleted UserHehe, the people with plastic objects were a humoristic element. They represented the Greek tourism, which is a big source of income. Here in Sweden, one of the commentators were Greek, and she talked us through the whole thing, explaining what different people that were represented and what the dances and songs and everything were. I wouldn't have understood a thing without that.

Did you see that cute little Chinese girl, who got scared of the explosions?
At the next Olympics she won't be that little anymore...

Also, the children who participated in the extinguishing ceremony were apparently orphans.

I don't find this peculiar after the massacre of about 12 Israeli athletes back in the olympic games of 1972...

But go figure, we Israelis are weird (especially when it comes to paranoia over security). :
