The title says it all. Did you read any good books lately?

The last book I read was The Chronicles of Amber (great fun). Right now I'm reading a book about the Third Reich. It's not a novel, but it's very interesting, and scary when you notice some similarities to our age.

How about you?

The Crimson Rivers - that's the book the film Les Rivičres Pourpres is based on, right? The movie was great.

Yup, that's the one... I read the book before the movie was there, found the book to be more exciting, but they usually are...

True. Still, it's a great movie, if you haven't read the book. I've seen it 4-5 times.

He also did the screenplay for Vidocq, which was a very good movie too...

I really wanted to see that movie, but I missed it
.

Another very good book I read lately is The Riddle-Master's Game trilogy by Patricia A. McKillip.

I'm reading all the Ann McAffrey Dragonriders of Pern series (seems like there's about 17 of them, can't remember). I'm on #4, Moretta: DragonLady of Pern.

I'm sorry to admit that I am a serious "fluff" reader... give me a good best selling mystery and I'm good to go!
I just finished Jeffrey Deaver's "The Blue Nowhere" - a murder mystery with a computer twist and Carol Shield's "Stone Diaries" - a wonderful story of a woman's life from 1905 through the present.
And, since I commute for an hour each way to work, I'm listening to unabridged "The Two Towers" (from recordedbooks.com) on CD in preparation for the movie release.  What an adventure THAT is!

I'm reading 'The Witching Hour' by Anne Rice just now. It's probably one of my favourate books.
But I'll no doubt put it on hold as soon as Jane Jensen finishes off 'Dantes Equation'. I can't wait for that one.

If you like fantasy, I recommend Lord Dunsany. His books/stories are incredible.

Deleted UserOther than reading books on history and cookbooks a good murder mystery is my idea of happiness.  I especially like the British ones.  More plot/less gore.
However, I have several US mystery writers who take gore to a new level and they are among my favorites.

I don't really read murder mysteries. Perhaps I should try one again.

Another *great* book I read lately was Lying on the couch by Irvin D. Yalom. It's about a psychotherapist and his patients, friends and colleagues. Great stuff. Extremely funny and very profound.

I'm currently reading "Reaper Man" by Terry Pratchet, one of the books in the Discworld series. It's a very funny book, and I'm going to look for more of the Discworld series after I'm done it.

If you haven't read Mort yet, you definitely should. It's worth it for the tagline alone.

Jonas, the Chronicles of Amber was incredible.  I read the first few "books" (chapters?) when they came out in paperback - a friend had the first 6 books or so and then sort of lost track.  How great to have all the stories in one collection! I think Amber would make an incredible graphic adventure game.  If you like Amber, have you read any Steven Brust? He's one of my favorite writers and his Vlad Taltos series is excellent - and really funny too.  I think Vlad would make an excellent advent. game character too!

Yep, Amber is truly great. You should really get the 10-books-in-one version
. Be careful though, there's another version which only includes the first five books.

Hmm, an Amber game. Now that would be awesome.

I've never read Steven Brust, but perhaps I should. Thanks for the recommendation.

If you like the Amber books, have you seen Roger Zelazny's Visual Guide to Castle Amber? Very interesting....

Hi, Jen! Yes, I use to have that book but it got lost in a move.  It was very interesting.  I wish I still had it.  It's very hard to find.

Jonas, I can't recommend Brust's books enough.  He's admittedly inspired by Zelasny.  Vlad Taltos is an assasin for hire.  And he dresses in black and silver like another character we know.  These books are really funny - Brust has a great sense of humor.  He's also a nice guy.  We've exchanged a few letters over the years.  I just wish he'd write more often!

PS I haven't read "Mort." Who is it by? What's it about? I like the Terry Prachett books too.  I like a bit of humor with my sword and sorcery!

Mort is a Discworld novel. The tagline is:

Deah comes to us all. When he came to Mort, he offered him a job.

Now ... that Brust person seems *very* interesting.

Thanks, Jonas.  I loved Death in Discworld Noir so I will definitely have to check this one out.  I haven't read the entire Discworld series....yet!

Amazon has Brust's first 2 Vlad books in one set. Check it out!

You know, I hear the Discworld series is picking up fame in the US. They've been famous in the UK for decades, just about everyone's read one. But it's really great to see them catching on

I am always reading something. I usually go for psycho killer type books before bed. Just finished Whisper of Evil by Kay Hooper and Muisc of The Spheres by Elizabeth Redfern - The second book was historical fiction, with the search for Celene the missing planet, overlayed with the French Aristo refugees from revolutionary France and a killer of young red haired women. Also re-read the Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes recently. Always nice to re-visit an old friend.

I am reading David McCullough's Book on John Adams right now and will start Tami Hoag's "
ust To Dust" this evening.

I'v started re-reading The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson. It's one of my favourite books. It just has such incredible depth and power ... some people hate it, but you cannot deny its emotional power.
