@Michal - I kinda guessed this would appeal to you! Amongst the cack there are some wonderful comments though...

Like my son said, quit perverting the word of God and using it to fit your agenda. This game is fine. It's God approved. I have a bolt of lightning for every Christian who thinks otherwise.

Ok guys I have seen the light. I should have never started this petition. I know now I am a stupid ignorant Christian who likes to try and make decisions for other people. I'll mind my own business from now on. So sorry. Us Christians can be so stupid sometimes trying to force our beliefs and the rest of the world. So sorry, I'll go kill myself now.

I rebuke you Doom 3, evil will be unleashed when this game is released. We must do everything in our power to see that this day does not come. Someone call Michael Moore to do a documentary about this travesty of a game being made. Whatever you do dont buy this devil worshiping game, show your stance and get Half Life 2 instead a non devil worshipng game not made with your tax money like Doom 3 really is.

DOOM 3 HAS BEEN PROVEN TO CAUSE MALE PATTERN BALDNESS! DO NOT - REPEAT- DO NOT BUY DOOM 3. IF YOU MUST USE IT, PLEASE PIRATE IT INSTEAD. THE WAREZ COPY CAUSES LESS HAIR LOSS.

BTW don't look at any of the URL's. I just made that mistake... there are some pretty sick people out there!  :-/

What with all the current UK Daily Mail outrage at Manhunt, Doom 3 didn't pick a good time to get released. Said newspaper is now runnning a campaign in this country to get rid of all games like GTA 3, Doom 3 (you only kill demons!), Unreal Tournament 2004 (apparently, cartoony games where you cannot die are "evil"
blah blah etc. etc.

In the words of Mr T - I pity the fool that reads the Dail Mail.

Yeah, I randomly clicked on a page and the first comment I saw was 2478 - I swear I had no idea she did that! But you're right, the petition (and the comments) appeals to me because it's so wonderfully absurd and pointless. It's almost poetic.

There's a funny comment from "Gabe Newell" telling people to buy HL2 instead. And I liked this one: "Oh dear, don't you have anything better to do? Would you prefer it that kids were out on the streets with guns shooting each other instead of at home shooting a computer generated monster?"

I didn't even try - but thanks for the warning anyway!

To be honest, I don't think the guys at id give a damn about Daily Mail
Hmm, I wonder how many Daily Mail readers will play Doom 3?

Oh, I'm sure the developers must be quaking in their boots :
Honestly, I find this more funny than anything else - the Mail is just so, so predictable.

The story was pretty grim  - this 17 year old hammering and knifing his "friend" to death because he was copying something from "Manhunt", not pleasant reading, but yes, no great surprise to see the Daily Sh*t-rag taking a reactionary, morally high-ground  stand. "Ban all these filthy games that pervert our children, blah blah..."

What they failed to take into account, the same as the censors of the "video nasties" in the 80s, is that a seventeen year old must already have a serious moral deficiency if he thinks beating someone to death with a hammer is cool, or acceptable in real life.

The electronics retailers Dixons have now boycotted the game - like anyone could really give a damn what Dixons think. In fact that puts me off ever shopping there.

Hmm. Not played it, and it's admittedly not one my wish list. Is it any good, or as unpleasant as it sounds?

The things they didn't consider about the Manhunt incident...

1- Rockstar Games is one of the most accessable computer game companies to work for. They employ a LOT of freelance writers and artists. That makes it a really good place to get a foot up into the buisness.

2- Nobody questioned why a young teen kid was allowed by his parents to play and own an 18+ game.

3- There have been numerous experiments that show no correlation between games and children's behaviour, or the fact that children can easily and intuitively tell the difference between reality and fantasy. All of these are neglected in favour of shock media reporting.

4- Also neglected are the literally BILLIONS of people that play these games, and then do NOT run out on murder sprees.

5- Also neglected is the fact that Hitler didn't play Doom.

I mean, it's so much EASIER for someone to say "My child played this game and suddenly, spontaniously, mutated into a demented murderous demon" than to say something honest like "Even though it's obvious his parents were neglectful in allowing him to enguage in unsuitable entertainment for him, he was still ultimately old enough to be responsible for his own actions. The only thing responsible for his choice to murder someone was himself."

Oh and Dom - it's an okay game. Gameplay's a lot like Blood Omen 2, storyline's kinda basic.. Aside from the atmosphere (very grimey punk-noir), not a lot stands out about it. It's okay, but wouldn't get more than 6/10 from me. You're not missing anything.

Deleted UserWolfies being generous. I thought it was rancid, not really about the content (I can handle stuff like that, especially if it's PS2 blocky 3D) but the gameplay was just boring. Like a crap Splinter Cell.

True, but I place a LOT of importance on a game's atmosphere.

Best signature so far:

37. Flight Officer Ellen Ripley - I say we take off and nuke the game from orbit.  It's the only way to be sure.

Deleted UserI just bought and installed DOOM 3. It sure didnt like my ATI 9800 Pro 128mb to be overclocked. Had to set it back to defaults to avoid any artifacts.

Game looks good at 1024x768... haven't got into it much yet.... supposed to be doing some work...

Be interested to hear how it runs for other people though...

5 AUG 2004 at 9:30pm
Deleted UserI played DOOM 3 a bit more last night.

Firstly here's my specs:
P4 2.8ghz
1 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
Audigy 2 ZS

I put the video settings as follows:
1024x768
High Quality
All advanced options on except vSync
2xAA

The game runs fine for me on these settings. The speed of gameplay is a lot slower than the original DOOM which means your going to notice lower framerates a LOT less. The frame rate is capped at 60fps so you wont get more than that during the game anyway (timedemo benchmarks are uncapped). I didnt have any noticable hitching whilst playing either, therefore, so far so good as far as gameplay at these settings go.

They've gone for a very Dark moody game this time around, in fact its VERY dark. You will be reaching for your ingame flashlight quite a bit. They have decided to go with the "see your enemy" OR "Shoot your enemy" option whereby you cannot wield a light source AND a weapon. This probably artificially increases the tension in the game... On the whole though...it stops the typical "run 'n gun" strategy because you tend to get out the flashlight and have a bit of a looksie first.

I played last night with the lights out in my study and it makes visibility a lot better. Sound offers some additional atmosphere to the game. As you'd expect, the game looks beautiful (when you can see it
)

The monster deaths were a tad dissapointing as I was kind of hoping for some nice spirtual death sequence light show etc, instead they just die in a mist of blood particles. (I liked the death sequences in Prince Of Persia: Sands of time  [smiley=thumbs.gif]... Something like that would have been nice)

I am enjoying it heaps so far and I'm not that far in. Looking forward to a nice Friday night of DOOM 3 playing (after watching the final episode of "Quest for the Sea" ie).

Now SJH/MB, where's your report!

Unless he's hijacked a copy it not out in the UK until 13th August

Looking forward to playing it. UK PCGAMER gave it 90%.

Is it a new game or just a remake of Doom with pretty graphics.

WOW, I assumed that being as its on store shelves here, it MUST be available everywhere... Oh well...

I dont think its just a DOOM remake by any stretch. DOOM was MUCH faster paced... a LOT brighter (although it had its dark moments). The original DOOM threw vast numbers of monsters at you... That isnt going to happen in DOOM 3 (At least I doubt it so far). They've gone for more "atmosphere" this time around in terms of picking up PDAs and fleshing out a bit of a story. Its not exactly innovative gameplay either... So far, its the same gameplay you've seen quite a number of times over, but its well done all the same. (but It doesnt remind me of the original DOOM when I'm playing... some people seem to be saying.. Its DOOM!!, but perhaps those people have simply forgotten about DOOMs FAST pace)

There are some "jump back" moments....

5 AUG 2004 at 11:28pm
Deleted UserYou reassure me with your comments. I saw it in Future Shop yesterday and the guy there was trying to make it run on a demo computer (directly at the entrance doors with a huge stack of DOOM3 boxes). The poor thing didn't manage to hit more than 10 frames/sec at 640x480, medium details. I don't know the specs of his demo-computer but it sure wasn't highlighting the game
.

I'll wait for the demo to try my comp at it.

I guess it won't run if they threw around with masses of monsters.

And just think about how it would look like...a high-polished game like this and monster madness...doesn't add up. What use is it if you can't stop and look at the graphics?

I ran the "timedemo demo1" to get some figures for you..

Res: 1024x768
Quality: High
Everything on except Vsynch and AA (I personally cant tell the difference from No AA and 2xAA in Doom 3 visually, but it robs me of 5fps in the timedemo)

ran the timedemo twice (to avoid unrealistic number of texture loads during demo which aren't noticable during gameplay).

Second run gave me an average of 37.5 FPS.
