Status : Offline | Thanks. Over serveral attempts I gradually reduced both the graphics and sound accelerations to the point where the application didn't respond.  arn thing still "stutters" at points where I would expect the person(s) on the screen to engage in a dialog. Byzantine won't budge from there. If it makes any difference, the cursor changes from the four-pointed arrows to a square without any arrows when it is placed over the person doing the "stuttering."
In the meantime, since my earlier post, I have completely reinstalled the WinXP system and reinstalled all other applications from backup cd's, restored all old files, etc., so my system should be as clean as it could be.
This is really frustrating, and if there are any other ideas I might persue, I would be most happy to hear of them.
Anyway, thanks for the help so far. It really has been appreciated.

| Deleted User | Did you try following Inferno's directions for manually increasing the Virtual Memory set aside for the game?

Status : Offline | At first, I did not remember to increase the virtual memory after I had reinstalled WinXP. I was reminded to do so when I started getting a number of messages from Byzantine saying that I did not have enough memory to run the game. The game did run, but these messages kept popping up.
I then increased virtual memory to 1500. The game now seemed to be okay. . . until I got to that "stuttering" problem at the Topkopi Gates. When I visited other locations, that stuttering problem also occurred, I think when people were going to be speaking. At the Park, there was some stuttering but the conversation between the man and woman did take place.
I keep hoping there is some sort of system fix or adjustment, but I don't know what to try next.
Thanks for your continued interest and assistance.

Status : Offline | Thanks for your note. I had the same problem -- freezing when the telephone rang. At first I just reran and skipped answering the phone. But the other problem emerged. When I uninstalled and reinstalled using the suggestions offered by BacardiJim I got past the phone problem but the new "stuttering" problem emerged.
I might try to run Byzantine on my Win98 laptop, but it's a smaller screen (surprise!) and the sound system is subpar. But that might be the answer if I want to enjoy the game.
Appreciate your note.
